What is valuable... I love getting asked the same or similar questions as I get older because I get to mentally chart who I am and where I am going. Take for example, "where do you want to be in 2-4 years?" My younger self thought that titles defined value and importance. That my influence could only be effective if I had a title that others respected. So my answer was a title. Fast forward 10 years and at that age my answer got a bit more abstract. I realized that titles meant little if you cared little about others. My effectiveness was no longer dependent on what people called me but rather if they knew that I cared about them. So my answer was a title but with purpose on how I would use it. Fast forward to now. I have a title but it holds little importance to me rather I seek opportunities to help others. To listen to their stories. To help them on their journeys. To help them know that while it is important to be effective and efficient in your career, that career is only here to help support your priorities. Priorities of faith, spouse, and children. And while this view may limit what "titles" I could have it will never limit the value I can bring to others. So that is where I want to be.

Mention Prior Authorizations and you will see a look like this. How many times have I had a provider ask if we could make AI do automatic PA's and keep their staff off of eternal hold? I wonder what MA's electronic prior authorization system will look like? This will be interesting since so much of Medicare and now Medicare Advantage is the forerunner of standard practice. Now a new bipartisan bill, the Improving Seniors' Timely Access to Care Act, seeks to streamline Medicare Advantage by improving the prior authorization process. Senator Tim Kaine noted the current administrative challenges in healthcare provision, emphasizing the necessity to reduce delays in care for seniors. The proposed changes aim to introduce an electronic prior authorization system, enhance transparency, and provide additional safeguards for beneficiaries. The bill also mandates regular reporting to Congress by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Overall, this legislation aims to simplify the healthcare process for older Americans, ensuring timely access to necessary care while reducing administrative burdens on healthcare providers, representing progress towards a more efficient healthcare system under Medicare Advantage. Workforce shortages are a big issue in healthcare. There's a growing need for digital solutions that can streamline workflows and create efficiencies. At the recent HIMSS23 conference, major companies like Microsoft, Epic, 3M, and Amazon Web Services announced new integrations and collaborations to support healthcare staff. But with so much innovation happening, it can be overwhelming for health systems to direct their focus and understand their specific needs. One solution that's gaining traction is virtual nursing, which offers much-needed relief in acute-care areas. HCA Healthcare's Sherri Hess shared that the program has helped with admissions, discharge teaching, and hourly rounding. It also attracted retired or academic nurses who want to provide care. Automation is another key area for healthcare organizations to consider, as it can help return hours back to patient care. Providence, for example, has built a predictive scheduling tool that automates a laborious manual process and frees up time for caregivers. Also, there's a growing interest in the practical applications of machine learning in healthcare. Phoenix Children's Hospital's David Higginson shared that his organization has built ML models that help diagnose malnutrition, predict no-shows, and identify potential donors. However, he emphasized the importance of finding the right problems to solve and showing concrete benefits for the organization. Very good day with FHA and John Riggi. FHA hosted a Cybersecurity and Risk Workshop yesterday in Orlando. Talk about a timely topic. I enjoyed hearing from other Healthcare IT leaders and insights from John and the panel members was invaluable. No matter how mature your program is or how much effort you've put in, there's still work to be done. Healthcare is a target and we need to align and partner across the industry. I learned a lot from my peers yesterday and I appreciate Florida Hospital Association putting this event together. We need more dialogue and cooperation. A few key points from yesterday: 1. Healthcare shouldn't compete on Cybersecurity. 2. You can't patch humans. 3. Partner with local and federal law enforcement & Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency early and often.

The consequences of choosing the wrong EHR system for an organization can be significant. Making a poor decision in selecting a platform not only leads to wasted taxpayer money but also hinders progress. Admitting a major mistake in this area can be challenging, often resulting in attempts to rectify the initial problem before considering a change in direction. I was recently interviewing a candidate for a Healthcare Consultant role. This confident young guy is acing all my questions. After some warm-up questions, I popped this one: "What's the deal with EHR integration, anyway?" He fires back, "It's all about smoothing out the provider workflow with some nifty automation."
