Is organic digital awareness and lead generation on the way out because of AI? I've spoken about the trajectory of search and the possible implications of AI. Like I mentioned, answer based search instead of results based search will start to become the new normal. In this environment there will be far less traffic directed to sites via web results based search. This will also create a new monetization path for Google (and others) via sponsored AI searches. My intuition here says that as organic search reduces in effectiveness more and more companies will have to rely in paid to drive search based traffic...... https://lnkd.in/gCxYRDnm

A week ago I anecdotally "noticed" that perhaps there is less Reddit in the Discussion & Forums SERP Feature. Brian F. noticed the same. (Just saw Lily Ray has some nice data on this as well!) Anywho... I asked the folks at Semrush to pull data to see if I was crazy or not and the answer is... maybe? There is a slight yet consistent downward trend in both Reddit and Quora URLs being used in the SERP feature. Conversely, other forums have seen the inverse trend and are seeing more placement. Is this of real significance? Hard to say that this is any sort of HUGE shift on the SERP. However, the trend does continue across other data points. For example, the number of Discussion and Forum features with multiple Reddit URLs is also down slightly over the past months So I would say, perhaps we are starting to see a crack in "Reddit's Armor"?! Would be interesting to track this and how/if the trend continues. Google recently had a leak of part of their mysterious ranking algorithm. Needless to say, the SEO community has been going ape-shart dissecting it this week. 🐵 The leak, which exposed over 14,000 potential ranking features, provides an unprecedented look under the hood of Google’s closely guarded search rankings system. It will take time to rummage through the info, understand the technical language, and draw conclusions to apply to your SEO approach -- but a few nuggets have already risen to the surface. Let's talk about them. 1) Clicks Matter - clicks to a page influence its rank, especially if they come from a Chrome browser. The click quality also matters - how long the user stays on the page, how much they engage with the page, and if they navigate your site deeper. 2) Fresher Links are Better Links - links from new pages contribute more "link juice" than those inserted in aged content. 3) Text Weight Matters - bigger and bolder fonts convey to Google that those keywords are more important in your content. 4) Hard to Replicate Content - Google has an LLM that tries to understand how easily a page could be recreated and how much work went into it. Tools, images, videos, unique information, and depth of information stand out as ways to score high on “effort” calculations. 5) % of Pages on Topic - Google wants to see websites dedicated to the topic, with very few pages off-topic. 6) Old, Non-Updated Content Ages Out - so be sure to go back and update your historically best-performing pages 7) Poor Content Can Bring Your Good Content Down - pages that have had time to perform but haven't can bring down your overall domain. The solution is to regularly remove dated, under-performing pages so more of your live pages are quality. What else are you applying from the leak?

https://lnkd.in/gA-kQuDW This is yet another example of a situation where interests of the trade groups (online advertisers, in this case) are seemingly at odds with what a tech company feels are the best interests of the users (for us not to see unwanted ads while browsing). We saw the devastating impact on Meta’s business model some time back when Apple changed the tracking permissions. However, as we all saw, after the initial huffing and puffing, Meta adopted and bounced back, and it’s stock price reflects this ride. Hi Friends! We have been sending out a monthly newsletter Eminent SEO for about 1 million years now... we blasted our list and the next day Google confirmed their update. Here is our last newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gzDxaMJ4 And, my update that went out today: We’re writing with a quick update on the last newsletter. We can now confirm that Google has officially completed the March update as of April 19th, 45 days after their initial announcement. This was a more complex update that involved updating multiple core systems simultaneously, while also ending the standalone “helpful content” update. However, Google didn’t bother to tell us until the 26th, 52 days after the rollout began… and this leaves the SEO community wondering why? Google is quoted saying, “As the web and spam tactics continue to evolve, we’ll continue to work to reduce low quality, unoriginal content in Search.” And they added, “The March core update ranking improvements, which tackled spam and low quality content on Search, are now finished rolling out. As a reminder, on March 5th we launched a number of meaningful enhancements to our core systems, as well as several updates to our spam policies, to reduce content created for search engines on Search. They originally said it would be a 40% reduction in low quality and unhelpful content. Well, now Google confirmed it was really closer to 45%. HOLY CRAP GUYS. This means 45% of content found in the SERPs (search engine result pages) before this update has been obliterated. That is HUGE. This update overlaps with other roll-outs and previously completed algorithm changes – but in a nutshell, all of it is aimed at evolving how they identify helpfulness of content. Specifically this update has refined how Google understands which webpages are “unhelpful, have a poor user experience or feel like they were created for search engines instead of people.” This “could include sites created primarily to match very specific search queries,” Google added. Also, with this March 2024 core update, Google said they will stop announcing new “helpful content” updates, since the helpful content system has been incorporated into the core systems. If you have been hit, there aren’t specific actions given by Google in order to “recover”. A negative rankings impact may not signal anything is wrong with your pages. It might just be time to revisit your content strategy as a whole. Or, in other words, write helpful content for people – not just to gain search engine rankings. That’s SO 1999. If you need help, book a call. Our clients’ rankings are looking solid, because we’ve always focused on quality content for the users. That’s what effective SEO is today… and frankly the only thing worth investing into. Who wants to spend their marketing budget on low quality content in the first place?
