Thanks for sharing Jaume Girona Badia . Grid forming provision may be needed for renewable generation as well. In this case, in a context of variable resource, it is important to control the DC voltage while ensuring grid forming behavior in the AC side. In CITCEA-UPC, we studied this for single-stage PV inverters. We hope our paper is of interest!

🔔 For those who've missed it, PJM Interconnection posted last week a very neat infographic showing the status of their queue. Something I found interesting is that PJM shared they've cleared around 40 GW of new generation to connect to the grid that has not yet started construction. According to PJM, nothing from their end is holding these projects back, but yet they sit idle due to financing, siting or supply chain issues. This also aligns with the recent post made by Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) where they flagged 50 GW of approved generation projects that are in various stages of completion with many still awaiting construction due to similar problems flagged by PJM. If you're a developer in this situation, it would be great to learn more about the challenges you are facing.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently issued Order 896 to bolster electric grid reliability during extreme weather events. This significant step requires grid planners to incorporate a new approach to long-term transmission planning.   To support this important effort, EPRI, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), and the North American Transmission Forum, Inc. The Federal-State Modern Grid Deployment Initiative, supported by 21 states including Arizona, California, and New York, aims to modernize the U.S. power grid to handle future challenges and opportunities. This initiative, involving collaboration among states, federal entities, and power sector stakeholders, focuses on upgrading grid capacity and capabilities using modern technologies like high-performance conductors and grid-enhancing technologies. Funded by the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with $10.5 billion in competitive grants from the DOE's Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program, the effort is crucial as the current grid, built in the 1960s and 70s, is aging and struggling with extreme weather and renewable energy demands. Additional support comes from the DOE Loan Programs Office and the Department of Agriculture’s Empowering Rural America program. Technical assistance is provided by the U.S. Climate Alliance and various DOE programs, with new FERC rules promoting long-term regional transmission planning and advanced technologies, supported by advocacy from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). https://lnkd.in/eVie-c8v

PJM issued a Hot Weather Alert with expected temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s over the next 10 days. To ensure grid reliability during this hot spell, the alert is in effect from June 17 through June 21, and may be extended based on updated forecasts. This alert prepares transmission and generation operators for significant increases in electricity demand. However, PJM Interconnection’s currently has the generation capacity and transmission capability to meet the expected demand on the system during the heat wave, but extended periods of extreme heat does have the potential to stress the electric system and cause reliability challenges. It's interesting to note that in comparison to 2023, on the solar side, the biggest projects include the 427 MW Fox Squirrel Solar Farm, 150 MW phase of the Fox Squirrel Solar Farm, which will have 577 MW of capacity once fully operational later this year, however, the 325 MW AEUG Union Solar Project in Union County, Ohio is expected to support the grid this summer. The 2023 Cumulative Capacity of the renewables in PJM was around 220,827 MW, and they plan to add over 10,000 MW in the following years wherein 95% of the projects are all renewable generation sources. Solar energy will definitely play a key role this summer.
