Here's the advice I give to every intern on their exit interview: 1. Get creative about applying to jobs. Every job ad we've ever posted, we usually get about 100 applications in the first hour. So if you're applying for a job, how are you going to make your resume stand out? Is a resume and cover letter really the only way you can get their attention? This is a creative field, so get creative. 2. Remind people you exist. Doing the work almost feels like the easy part. The hardest part is getting the work. Start keeping a list of people you want to work with, and remind them you exist. If you're top of mind, they might think of you when there's an opening. 3. Good work generates good work. If you want to make films, make films. Your cell phone has a camera that is better than anything I used before I was 28. If you want to act, film yourself doing monologues. Write your own play and then cast it. The more work you do, the better you get, the more people you work with, the more connected you get, the more jobs you get offered, the more work you do, the better you get, etc. 4. Specialize. Even if you don't know what you really want to do, pick something. People have short attention spans, and their job is not to get you a job. It's so much harder to connect an aspiring writer/creator/editor/artist with an assistant editing gig than someone who aspires to be an editor. "This person wants to be an editor...that would be perfect for this assistant editing gig." It's a 1:1 connection. No one wants to be pigeon-holed, but that's just the way the brain works. 5. I've generally found that the easiest gigs to get paid for are the ones that take technical knowledge, and equipment. Editing, cinematography, sound, motion graphics...all much easier than getting writing or directing gigs. Anyone can wave their arms around and talk to actors...everyone has a piece of paper they can write on. But if someone doesn't know how the camera works it's VERY apparent VERY fast. 6. Going from graduation to getting paid was one of the hardest transitions of my life, but you can do it. It may be frustrating, and take longer than you want it to, but you can do it. Which leads to... 7. Struggling is a legitimate phase of life. I read an interview a long time ago - I used to have it taped to my desk - with a filmmaker who was struggling, living on a friend's couch, trying to make ends meet, not feeling like he was getting anywhere. A talk with his friend's mom turned his whole perspective around. I still have it memorized. "Struggling is a legitimate phase of life," she said. "When you become successful, you're going to miss it. You're going to look back on this time of your life with a lot of romance, so you might as well enjoy it while you're going through it now." I’m Jeremy, a passionate creative & creator since childhood. My experience and reflections have led me to believe in these principles for our industry ⬇ Autonomy: I think creatives need to stand on our own two feet. We can’t rely on agencies, executive producers, account managers, or client reps. We must represent ourselves. Strategy: I think creatives need to get good at positioning. We must look objectively at the market without getting blinded by ego, and we must leverage our advantages - and do that as creatively as we can. Personality: I think people need to be more honestly outspoken in the workplace. Not just creatives. Everybody. We’re so so afraid that our true opinions, thoughts or feelings might hinder our careers. I say “be yourself and let the chips fall where they may” cus the alternative is stagnant homogeny 🤮 Transparency: I think we should share more with one another. Much more. I think we should know what the money looks like, what the deals look like, what the feelings feel like, what the practical struggles are, the existential ones too, the raw opinions, and the underlying MOTIVES. Too much poker face, vanilla content and carefully crafted self-serving narrative out there. Complexity: The world is very rarely black & white. If you can’t grasp the nuance, if you can’t assess the big picture, you are fostering the problem. Critical thinking and smart discourse are so dam crucial if we’re to make anything good happen for ourselves over the long run. Meritocracy: You should reap what you sow. We don’t all deserve the same outcomes and compensations. Hard work, persistence, sacrifice, smarts and talent should correlate to achievement. Our appetite for achievement is on each of us to define at the individual level. But let's not shame or wish ill upon the ambitious. Instead perhaps celebrate ambition as much as we celebrate moderation? But above all, I believe in True Creativity: We’ve really lost our way on this front. It’s very rare to see anyone simply "making what they want to make, the way they want to make it". There's too much analysis, too much data, too much risk aversion, too much A/B testing, too much responding to what the market says it wants. I say "make what you love and share it lovingly ❤️" - especially if your circumstance permits. To me, creativity isn’t a bargaining chip. It’s a gift from above. And if you got it, you owe it back to the world 10x. Even if it's taken for granted by some of the people immediately in front of you... the universe pays dividends. So just have fun, be generous and swing hard every time. Otherwise what's the point... Why am I here? To help more creatives service more clients directly. Here's a fun fact I love for my podcast host friends out there: 63% of people said they trust their favorite podcast host more than their favorite social media influencer. Podcasting is a stage where you can expand on your topics of expertise beyond the 90 second reel. People are tuning in to hear your voice, your energy and your wisdom. It's one of the best ways to get to know someone faster. You have a chance to really hold someone's attention. That's nothing to sneeze at in this current social media landscape. When you find yourself getting caught up in comparison or the "I should have more downloads/be farther along", remember this. Then dial in on what makes your podcast special and what your metrics are telling you.

As a diehard Star Trek fan, I've been absorbed in an audiobook chronicling the 50-year production history of this iconic series. It's a treasure trove of anecdotes and behind-the-scenes tales that have both delighted and surprised me. What caught my attention most was learning about the casting decisions - how certain actors we've come to associate so strongly with their characters weren't originally slated for those roles. Some were even considered for entirely different characters before finding their perfect fit. This revelation made me reflect on our own journeys, how we roam through life trying to discover the character we're meant to play. Much like the casting process in Hollywood, we can't find our true calling without putting ourselves out there. The stories from Star Trek's casting couch remind us that often, we might start aiming for one role, only to find ourselves perfectly suited for another we hadn't considered. The key is to audition – to try new experiences, take on challenges, and open ourselves to opportunities. It's through these auditions in life that we start to understand who we are and where we excel. Just as actors must step onto the stage and perform to discover their ideal roles, we too must engage with the world around us, test our limits, and sometimes, face rejection to ultimately find where we belong. Encouragingly, our "role" in life, much like in Star Trek, may surprise us, fitting us more snugly than anything we could have initially imagined. The process of self-discovery requires bravery, a willingness to explore, and the resilience to keep auditioning, even when the part doesn't seem immediately clear. Remember, the character you're destined to play is out there; it's just waiting for you to step into the audition room of life and claim it. Engage boldly in your quest, try new things, and one day, the role you're meant to embody will land in your lap, as surely as the stars grace the night sky. A24 doesn’t give a SH*T about how you feel about their new A.I. generative marketing campaign. They want to promote their new movie “Civil War” to you. Rather than spending upward of $50,000 on a high-end movie poster campaign, Hollywood's hottest studio opted to spend $8.99 for a Midjourney subscription, pawn it off to A.I, and slap the A24 logo across it. But at least they combed over the A.I. generated images with some form of Photoshop ‘secret sauce’… right? Nope! Weird fingers, sandpaper-like flames, and melted logos — ALL glaringly obvious ‘OUT-OF-THE-BOX A.I.’ red flags, blatantly left in the movie studio’s ad campaign. A24 drops a 50 million budget film—ironically, following a photojournalist—yet consciously chooses to cast aside photographers, graphic designers, and creative artists in favor of robo-made generative images. How could an entire marketing campaign slip through the cracks of such a prominent, culture-forward, movie studio? CUT TO: Movie buffs swarm the streets of Instagram to protest A24’s blatant ‘F*CK YOU’ to the film community’s creatives; fans and collaborators protesting the tools that unions had fought so hard against this last year; leaving families out of work, food off tables, and splintered the studio-and-artist relationship for good. Folks who have seen 'Civil War' are even saying that the A.I. generated images for the campaign have 'nothing to do with the actual film But what do I think? Well, hard for me to form a nuanced opinion… Admittedly, I haven’t actually seen the film. The only thing I DO know is — Now I HAVE to see the film. How else will I properly weigh in on the dystopian film following the fight against rebel factions in America… marketing with dystopian tools in a rebellious fashion in America? Hold up… Is this the biggest F*CK UP in modern marketing? Or the rebellious swag of a genius marketing strategy to promote A24’s “Civil War” in theaters now?

What are relatable opening scenes in a video? Like a visual handshake, the opening scenes welcome your audience into your video story. Their goal is to connect with your target viewers' experiences, desires, or challenges - making sure your audience knows they're in the right place. 🟠 I'm not talking about "flashy" or "clever." Opening scenes that try too hard to impress easily lose the more important and relatable human touch. Those rapid, high-intensity cuts between scenes might dazzle - but they probably leave the viewer wondering, "What does this have to do with me?" More fitting for a blockbuster movie trailer than a connection-building brand video. Ever wonder what this thing is? 🎬 Well, it's called a clapper (or a slate). And no they aren’t just for show - but they do look pretty cool. In the world of video and film, things aren't always shot in the storyboarded order. Why? For a whole bunch of reasons— → All sorts of logistical challenges → Working around actor schedules → Making the process more efficient → Dealing with unpredictable weather and lighting With all these moving pieces, you need a tool to keep everything in sync and make sense of it all. Enter the clapper. It helps the post-production editors work their magic by providing clearly labeled shots and a distinct marker to sync up all the different video and audio sources. Every time we use a clapper on set, we get a similar reaction. "Omg I've always wanted to hold one of these" "Can I try it?!" It’s always a hit, and now you know—it’s more than just for show! What if we revolutionized how companies hire for creative positions? Instead of relying heavily on portfolios and CVs, let's treat interviews like project pitches. Many roles are so complex and extensive that it's nearly impossible to capture the full breadth of someone's abilities on paper. Imagine if "Show & Tell" became the new hiring method. Candidates would demonstrate their skills through a sample project brief, showcasing their talent in real-time. Not something overly extensive—because asking someone to build out an entire campaign for free would be criminal—but a task that covers a range of skills required for the role. Some might argue that this approach is more time-consuming and costly for companies. However, the cost of not seeing what a candidate can do in real time could be even higher. Real-time scenarios and the results they produce set potential candidates apart from the rest. In today's world, distinguishing between reality and manufactured reality is challenging. By seeing candidates in action, we can make more informed hiring decisions, ensuring we bring the best talent on board.
