Thanks to the team at The Frictionless Experience for giving me a chance to share some thoughts. This was my first podcast and quite a learning experience. The team there was professional and made the experience run smoothly end-to-end, helped guide me throughout, and waved the magic wand of the editor's paintbrush so that my podcast naivete didn't show through too much in the finished product. I'm constantly humbled by the amazing talent in the analytics and personalization spaces, and I hope our view of the space can provide additional perspective as well that others find helpful. My own personal journey has been one of learning that there is material value in getting as many minds to the table as possible, informing them with elevated data narratives, and finding a real synergy between the expert opinions of our co-workers and the data narrative. Sometimes I think stepping away from discussions on the quality of data, platform, and identity resolution, and instead focusing on building solid narratives from data can perhaps help data and technology follow from narrative and curated experiences, rather than narrative and curated experiences following data and technology. I hope it's helpful to you.

Great omni-channel retailers collect 1st party data. We have a client with a handful of locations and pop-ups. They want to grow their omni business, and better message customers in digital. When we ran a customer match to their DTC channel we only got a 10% match. Yikes. But it wasn't because there wasn't crossover. Anecdotally, we know there's plenty. Rather it was because this brand was NOT COLLECTING 1st party data at the register (or afterward). To tie customer data from retail to DTC you need to collect some type of 1P data. - email address - customer id - phone number Legacy retail brands are really good at this. I'm talking Kohls, Old Navy, Bath & Body Works, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc. They grab little bits of 1st party data and stitch them on the backend. Here's some of my favorite tactics: - just asking for email/phone number at the POS Simple + effective. Doing this will get you 50%+ Then try other methods... - store credit cards  - unique coupon codes - loyalty and perks programs - those little CSAT surveys on the receipt - online product registration post-purchase - in-store free wifi if you type in your email - in-store sweepstakes (those little QR codes) - sms signup in-store (text BLAH20 for 20% off) These tricks work for other industries too. Hotels, restaurants/bars, museums, airports. Really anywhere with a physical location. If you have a retail presence, you need to collect (and stitch) 1P data. Selling is a marathon not a sprint. So, it's not always best practice to go for discounting simply to clinch a deal. Makes sense: If you bring a client on with low rates, they’re always going to expect the low rates. They’ll feel entitled to perpetual bargains and will likely jump ship if you ever decide to raise fees. Discounting can therefore be a dangerously downward spiral. 🎯 Target Is Rolling Out a New GenAI Tool 💬 Target is set to roll out generative AI chatbot to team members across its nearly 2,000 stores by August to boost efficiency and customer service. The goal is to streamline inventory management, optimize staffing, and enhance in-store experiences. We have learned from other companies (Air Canada, Microsoft, and RiteAid just to make a few) what can go wrong when AI technologies are released without proper employee training and/or monitoring. "Economist" 😁 Kameryn Griesser, "Austin's tech industry sees wave of layoffs; local economists remain bullish" “These tech companies really amped up on hiring and in many situations, possibly over-hired. We were on a really fast growth trend, so they hired to be able to deliver, and now things are stabilizing,” said Stacy Schmitt, the senior vice president of communications for Opportunity Austin. State economics analyst Mark Sprague echoed the sentiment saying “what goes up must come down,” and attributing the recent wave of layoffs to a broader trend in the tech industry nationally. “It's misleading to say we are the next Silicon Valley or the next big startup hub. We're not good at everything, no one can be," CEO of startup incubator MediaTech Ventures said. "'Tech’ is too generic a word. It includes everything from software and fintech to semiconductors. A lot of people that came here thinking Austin was great for ‘tech’ are now considering, ‘is my business actually appropriate in Austin?’” Yep. I said it. Why? Because a city doesn't excel by being the same as everywhere else. The *reason* so many remain bullish on #Austin is that Austin is maturing to recognize strengths and weaknesses.
