Start Telling People by marketing expert Chris Matthews is a uniquely valuable resource for early-stage startups seeking to start their marketing effectively and efficiently. With a wealth of practical knowledge across a diverse range of industries, Matthews shares invaluable insights and proven strategies to accelerate growth and build a strong, long-term brand.

Start Telling People is an indispensable guide for technical startup founders, investors, and marketers, packed with practical advice tuned explicitly for the unique needs of emerging startups. Matthews provides frameworks, examples, and interviews that reinforce the book's central thesis: marketing is a discipline, not just an activity. From customer-centric go-to-market models, to the tips and tricks of mastering a new product demo, to content strategy & A.I. tools, to surviving budgeting and downturns, the book delivers practical, jargon-free ideas that blend the best in marketing fundamentals with the functional realities of fast-paced, growth-focused startups.

"I've always believed that the marketing function is only a tiny fraction of what marketing departments actually perform! This gem is a perfect illustration of why we need to think about marketing more as a discipline, a way of thinking, and a philosophy!"

  • Volley Automation

    New Project!
This one has been in the works for a little while now. Volley Automation is a robotics & software company in SF working on automated car parking systems that densify garages by up to 2x. It's like a valet, but (thankfully!) without the valet. It's a better option for people, cars, and the environment. Plus, the team here is amazing - and yes, they're hiring!

So far, this project has spanned a refreshed brand identity, messaging, positioning, and videography - and it's all…

  • Director of Publicity and Internet Stardom for Dug the T-Rex (Our Lawn Dinosaur)

    - Present

We have a lawn dinosaur. We dress him up sometimes.

This whimsical creative outlet is a 6ft tin Tyrannosaurus Rex that lives in our front yard (chained up of course so he stays out of traffic). His frequent costumes and outwardly friendly personality have gained him a substantial group of Facebook fans, and on any given post he can see engagement levels that would make global brands salivate. He's been #1 on Reddit on three separate occasions, as well as features on HuffPo, ABC news…

His frequent costumes and outwardly friendly personality have gained him a substantial group of Facebook fans, and on any given post he can see engagement levels that would make global brands salivate. He's been #1 on Reddit on three separate occasions, as well as features on HuffPo, ABC news, BuzzFeed, UpWorthy, MetaPicture, and others. He's built both online and offline community (you should see the drawer of fan mail), he's been featured on the cover of a popular kid's music CD, and he even sold T-shirts a couple times, raising over $1,000 for local Redwood City schools.
