THIS... is why we started Summit Venture Studio... These are 27 software development projects Spencer Walker and I worked on while inside the University of Utah. The Y-axis is Millions of dollars (valuation). The X-axis are value inflection points. The two companies that had the highest value at exit/raise in this chart were actually valued much higher but it skewed the graph so I am just showing how much they raised. The GREEN all exited or raised money, the BLUE were all licensed to established companies so a real value was never set after that and the RED were shut down. An interesting point to think about is that these projects were "assigned to us" and were not "chosen" as good business opportunities. Now we are screening the deals we work on for commercial viability. I am super excited for the future. Who wants to come and play with us and start a company with us? We have 8 in the pipeline and I just finished a meeting where we agreed to launch our next company hopefully in the next few weeks.

This article showed up and was appropriate for what's going on in my world now and in September at Business Technology Association event in San Antonio. It's almost as if someone is tracking my interests. 🚀 AI, like all the next shiny things, without a real-world application to drive revenue is more than a distraction, it can be counterproductive with out an actual roadmap. Don't get me wrong, I rely on AI daily to increase my bandwidth and the team's efficiency, and it's working. 💪 We are able to do things faster, better, and most importantly reduce the investment needed by our clients to utilize the platform. We didn't get there as efficiently as we should have and the new shiny thing needed work. 🤖 ChatGPT, Claude, and embedded AI make a difference, but they're still only as good as the talent you have prompting the response. Thinking that AI will make you efficient at a new skill that others have invested years to be be subject matter experts at is not a great investment. 👏 West McDonald is a great conduit of all things AI and provides guidance for companies looking to explore areas of AI that are beneficial. I attened his break out session this week at the BTA event, and he gets it. West McDonald's partnership with Keypoint Intelligence is a great resource for you to consider when navigating this new world and I am positive he can reduce the learning curve for utilizing AI. 📅 In September at the Business Technology Association event in San Antonio, Texas, I will be sharing AI tools ERPIZO used to shorten and automate business planning processes from hours to minutes. 🙌 Faris Delija was instrumental in creating this workflow and he will be joining me to share our process that you can hopefully use with your team. We are not AI experts but found this process beneficial internally and for our clients. 🎙️ I will also be hosting a panel of business owners who have found benefits in AI and are willing to share their real world application. Fun fact: The enterprise/corporate industry is driving the AI revolution - not consumers. This is the complete opposite of previous technology revolutions we've seen, like the PC or internet. The Dallas Regional Chamber's Convergence AI event gave a fantastic overview on the effect of AI currently and where innovators aim to see the science go. Businesses around the world are investing billions in AI applications and developing an AI cloud infrastructure that can handle future processes. Your business can join this revolution. Take a look at your existing processes. There are many small ways AI can augment your operations that don't involve investing heavily, or implementing new steps for your team. Welcome to the “Big 4” era of cloud. It's hard developing and being agile on quicksand but that is what you need to do for this disruption. Startups are finding traction with tooling, infrastructure, and various approaches at the application layer says latest note from Greylock's Jerry Chen and Jason Risch on state of funding right now. CISOs and data teams leveraging GenAI across cloud data platforms point to "the need for a new approach to cloud data security to ensure protected information such as regulated data and core IP is not ingested into AI models." Security is looking to AI agent approaches to revolutionize SOC, identity, and improve remediation in apps and infrastructure. Market shifts like this are super-disruptive and can be meteoric in scope. I was in SF a lot of years ago with Jerry and Nima Badiey one night for hours talking about that last transformation to the cloud -- I weighed in on all those "Black Swans" circling for the win all around us. It was not lost on me that being with those two while wearing the Heroku / Salesforce badge was kind of ironic considering where they were at the time (and had technologies that were far more challenging than I let on!) We've all heard of FOMO, but what about FOFU? 🤔 FOFU = fear of f***ing up 😨 And FOFU is higher than ever today. Manny Medina, CEO at Outreach, brought this up during his opening keynote at #RevOpsAF 2024 in San Diego a few weeks back. He calls it the no-decision epidemic. Because buyers are looking at opportunities, and choosing to "sit this one out." Because no one is getting fired for NOT making a decision, for continuing with the status quo. Because in today's market, FOFU > FOMO. So how do you flip this around? Manny offers up a few options, but my favorite is 👇 Micro-commitments 🤏 Instead of focusing on the macro-commitment of the deal, Focus on those micro-commitments to things like: Time 🕰️ Change 🤨 Investment💰 Make it easy for your buyer to take that first step, and then implement those micro-commitments at scale. As I educate myself in the venture capital realm, I learn about the ups and downs of the startup world. The Lacework news is interesting because when a startup is overvalued, it means its market price is higher than its true business value. If it's later bought for much less than its inflated valuation, it indicates that the market has corrected its perception of the company's worth. This situation can be tough for the original investors and founders who may face significant financial losses, as they won't get back as much money as they expected. It can also affect the startup's reputation and the morale of its team, as such a stark adjustment in value can lead to doubts about the business’s viability and future prospects. Code Willing’s concordance solution accelerates data ingestion, modelling, simulations and backtesting. Enables quants to get tested trading strategies to production markedly faster. We partnered with Code Willing on a similar premise - to accelerate the integration of ‘alt’ data (ie data without reliable identifiers). Alt data is increasingly important to trading strategies, so having an easy button for data integration is another example of time to value.
