University of Maryland, Materials Science and Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering Departments are now part of the SCALE consortium. The UMD PIs are Prof Christou and Pat McCluskey. We are looking forward to participating in Radiation Hardening of Microelectronics with a concentration in wide bandgap semiconductors. About SCALE There is a global need for microelectronics that are safe, reliable, and trustworthy. However, the design and manufacturing of these microchips is challenged by a number of factors, including disruptions of the manufacturing chain as well as an urgent need for a rapid increase in the skilled microelectronics workforce. The Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement (SCALE) network addresses this need. SCALE is the preeminent U.S. program for semiconductor workforce development in the defense sector. Led by Purdue University, funded by the Department of Defense and managed by NSWC Crane, SCALE facilitates a different approach to training highly-skilled U.S. microelectronics engineers, hardware designers, and manufacturing experts, ensuring U.S. leadership in this important area. SCALE provides unique courses, mentoring, internship matching and targeted research projects for college students interested in five microelectronics specialty areas: radiation-hardening, heterogeneous integration/advanced packaging, system on a chip, embedded system security/trusted AI, and supply chain awareness.

The latest iscussions from the 2024 American Physical Society March Meeting was about advancements and challenges in quantum computing and quantum algorithms. Despite recent progress, #noise in quantum bits (#qubits) remains a major obstacle, with efforts focused on quantum #errorcorrection and mitigation strategies. Discussions also emphasized the application of quantum #algorithms in noisy quantum computers, particularly in quantum machine learning (#QML), with a focus on practical implementation and overcoming limitations such as noise and data loading bottlenecks. Industry players like #GoogleQuantum AI, #IBMQuantum, and others are actively contributing to advancements in quantum computing hardware and software. Nature Computational Science is interested in publishing studies spanning fundamental research in quantum computing, algorithm development, and applications in real-world problems, aiming to contribute to the advancement of quantum information science.

In a study produced as part of my postdoctoral research at Politecnico di Milano, funded by FAPESP, we report a new study published in *Nature Quantum Information* (2024), showing the high-fidelity generation of 4-photon Greenberg-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states on a chip, a significant breakthrough for all-optical quantum technologies. This work highlights the integration of a bright quantum-dot based single-photon source with a low-loss reconfigurable glass photonic circuit, achieving unprecedented results in on-chip entanglement generation. The paper, titled "High-fidelity four-photon GHZ states on chip", https://lnkd.in/dQfE4ybc, with Fabio Sciarrino, Marco Liscidini, Nadia Belabas, and Roberto Osellame as key contributors. Our research focused on the generation of 4-photon GHZ states using a quantum-dot based single-photon source and a glass photonic circuit. We achieved an experimental fidelity to the target state of 86% and a purity of 76% through full quantum-state tomography. The entanglement was certified using a semi device-independent approach, violating a Bell-like inequality by more than 39 standard deviations. Additionally, we demonstrated a four-partite quantum secret sharing protocol on-chip, achieving a qubit-error rate of 10.87% with a sifted key of up to 1978 bits. These results underscore the potential of quantum-dot technology combined with glass photonic circuitry for scalable and high-rate entanglement generation. The systematic analysis and numerical modeling identified photon indistinguishability as the main factor limiting fidelity. Improvements in voltage source stability, temporal overlap, and polarization control are expected to enhance performance further. Reducing insertion losses and increasing operation rates to at least 500 MHz will also improve fidelity and purity, enabling higher bitrates and lower error rates in quantum protocols. Overall, our findings mark a significant milestone in the integration of quantum-dot based single-photon sources with photonic chips, demonstrating that this platform is mature enough for practical quantum devices. The long-term stability and potential for integrability of our quantum-dot source, combined with the reconfigurable optical elements in our photonic chip, position this technology at the forefront of developing practical photon-based quantum devices.

A turning point in recent research is identified in the clarification of the distinction between the time-dependent and time-independent approaches, and it is shown how the adoption of the latter has allowed new educational reconstructions to proceed much farther beyond what had previously been achieved. It is argued that sum over paths has now reached full maturity as an educational reconstruction of quantum physics and offers several advantages with respect to other approaches in terms of leading students to develop consistent mental models of quantum phenomena, achieving better conceptual understanding and a higher degree of longitudinal integration of knowledge.

Congratulations to Dr. Shaily (Assistant Professor #scsetbennett) for acceptance of the #research paper, “EDSFD parametrization in f(R,T) gravity with linear curvature terms” for #publication in Physics of Dark Universe, Elsevier. This paper investigates the flat Friedmann–Lemaitre–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) cosmological model using a suitable parameterization represented as a differential equation concerning the energy density of the scalar field, 𝜌𝜙, in the context of 𝑓 (𝑅, 𝑇) gravity theory. This parameterization is known as the Energy Density Scalar Field Differential Equation (EDSFD) parameterization. It results in a solution of the Hubble parameter containing four model parameters, namely, 𝛺𝑚0, 𝛺𝜙0, 𝐻0, and 𝛼. To constrain the model parameters, 77 data points from the Hubble dataset, 1048 points from the Pantheon dataset, and 6 data points from BAO are used. Using the constrained values, the author analyses and compare the proposed model with the standard 𝛬CDM model. An article by Dr. Hyunsoo Kim, assistant professor of physics, has been featured in a commentary in the prestigious Nature Physics journal. https://lnkd.in/dDgArzND "Now, Hyunsoo Kim and colleagues have demonstrated superconductivity below 5.4 K in a lab-grown sample of Rh17S15 (pictured), which is also found in nature as the mineral miassite (H. Kim et al. Commun. Mater. 5,17; 2024). Interestingly, the superconducting properties of this compound are quite different from those seen in most of the known superconductors."

How DDT went from triumph to tragedy… 👨‍🔬 It’s 150 years since Othmar Zeidler, a PhD student working for future Nobel laureate Adolf von Baeyer, first synthesised dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, more commonly know as DDT. In the century and a half since then, it’s hard to think of a compound that has had a more public rise and fall in reputation than DDT.  Chemistry World’s historical feature traces how it went from life-saving insecticide to banned substance in a few decades. And with calls for its regulation to be relaxed still in the background, who knows what its future will be? ⚗ Before its synthesis in 1874, DDT was unknown to science. For decades afterwards, it remained one among many (apparently) useless chemical compounds prepared by PhD students and subsequently ignored. Then in the 1940s, it was found to have a lethal impact on insects that transmit serious human diseases. 🚫 However, by  the early 1970s DDT’s use was banned or heavily restricted in many countries – partly due to concerns about its environmental impact, partly because some pests were becoming resistant to it. 🗽 But that wasn’t the end of it…. 1999, when the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus arrived in New York City. Thousands of people experienced flu-like symptoms, dozens were hospitalised, and a few died. Further outbreaks – and more deaths – prompted demands for DDT’s redeployment. ❓ There is still a huge global death toll from malaria.
