Top takeaways from the "Beyond the Basics: A #GenerativeAI Masterclass for Business Communicators" at #IABC24. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a workshop led by Matt Russell from the Mayo Clinic. The masterclass focused on leveraging #ChatGPT and other AI tools to grow and enhance business communications. Here are my top takeaways (first draft thanks to ChatGPT;) 1. Expand AI Use: Start using tools individually and then scale their uses across teams for enhanced productivity. 2. AI in Project Management: Integrate AI into project planning to streamline processes and boost efficiency. 3. Promote AI Integration: Develop strategies to advocate for AI adoption, keeping in line with policy and culture, while staying on top of advancements.

CEOs may not pen media responses themselves, which is understandable as they have time constraints. When left to the corp comm or PR team, and there is someone lazy out there (which is the case rarely), generic and AI-generated responses can be a turnoff to journalists. It's important for PR agencies and corp comm teams to ensure that responses are not AI-generated. I recommend this post by Alexandra Smith on "total journalism reach" -- The 19th's new readership metric. It's full of insights and data wisdom. One takeaway: prioritize consistency across platforms without being overly rigid. For example, #Instagram views get counted because their posts basically republish an abridged version of the story -- an increasingly common publishing strategy -- not just because the machine needs more #data. Above all, this model is attentive to the question of *why* we measure #readership. I've always felt that digital interactions are metaphorical -- as summed up in that now quaint adage: "tweets, not endorsements." What does readership *represent*? Answering that question will help you collect quality, consistent data on #news consumption. And that will bring us closer to the readers we serve. https://lnkd.in/gxn4wmYy

Life often moves at a frenetic pace. The last thing our readers want or need from us is a story that tells only a piece of a jumbled picture. I’ve long been a proponent of enterprise reporting: deeper stories about why things happen the way they do. During a Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus newsroom vision meeting last week, I identified different approaches to reporting that may help us better serve readers: 1. A higher percentage of enterprise stories 2. Swarming high-interest stories with follow ups 3.  Providing clarity stories 4. Creating takeaways from dense reporting. Of these four, clarity stories are the least comfortable for many of us in the newsroom. We report each new development in an ongoing issue, so we don’t see the need to retell the larger story from those already-reported parts. There’s a misguided assumption that readers should be up to speed on our previous reporting.  That’s where the “clarity” comes in. Sometimes we need to step back with fresh eyes and tell the whole story in a concise or narrative format, with the result being readers who understand what happened and why.

Unlike industries such as automotive or pharmaceuticals, AI companies aren't required to submit their products for testing before release, leaving consumers to rely on vague claims from companies. This lack of transparent evaluation makes it difficult for users to assess which AI tool is best suited for specific tasks and poses safety risks due to uncertain capabilities. Us Comms folks are wired to navigate tricky situations. MacGyver was my favorite show growing up. ‘Mac’ had a knack for solving problems and extensive scientific knowledge.  → He could unlock a vault with a paperclip and some bubble gum. Comms doesn’t always have all the resources, either. But we know how to play the hand we're dealt. - Assess the situation  - Explore options  - Make it work Being great at Comms requires us all to be MacGyvers. → A mix of expertise, experience and resourcefulness. We're strategic. We're scrappy. We're problem solvers.

In this Legal IT Insider product demonstration, Valerie McConnell, senior director of customer success at Thomson Reuters, showed me the functionality currently available within generative AI research platform CoCounsel. McConnell talks us through some of the eight CoCounsel use cases or ‘skills’, including the AI Search Database, where you can search the likes of contractual precedents, brief banks, or docket records. We talk about the importance of retrieval augmented generation. It was claimed #AI would mark the beginning of the end of #PR and #comms. Similar arguments were made for the media. However, new research from Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism has demonstrated the importance of trust and authenticity. 52% of U.S. respondents and 63% of UK respondents said they would be uncomfortable with news produced mostly with AI. However, respondents were comfortable with AI being used behind the scenes to make journalists' work more efficient. The global public has access to a seemingly endless supply of content. The choice is endless, in fact overwhelming at times, and this has resulted in more people being critical of the news they digest. Trust and authenticity are core values held in high esteem by the public. Rather than volume, AI needs to be deployed to strengthen these values. It is an area The PHA Group is actively exploring. #AI will be disruptive force - the next stage is understanding what role it will play.
