Delivered highest ever sales in Q4FY24, registering strong volume growth of 23% in FY24, despite global headwinds and geopolitical issues impacting our export markets. I spoke at the JSW One Platforms Ltd.’s MSME Masterclass yesterday! It was a great session with MSME owners, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals. Here are 5 major points that we discussed in this session: 1) I spoke of an in-depth understanding of the mechanical properties crucial for wires used in cold forging. 2) I discussed about common materials used in wire manufacturing for cold forging. 3) It was an interesting discussion about how material composition affects the properties of the wire and the final product. 4) We talked about the impact of tolerance levels on the quality and consistency of the fasteners. 5) The final point was about the importance of quality control measures in fastener manufacturing. Indian steel sector has been outshining other major steel-producing countries, and being part of the steel industry in the country, Kairali TMT is proud of this remarkable growth and resilience displayed by our nation's steel sector amidst global headwinds. The latest data from the World Steel Association (WSA) is a testament to the strength and potential of Indian steelmakers. While major steel-producing countries like China, Japan, and the United States grappled with declining production in April 2024, India alone stood high, recording an increase. This achievement is a direct result of the robust demand for steel in the domestic market because of the booming infrastructure projects. According to a report in The Economic Times, which is quoting the WSA data, India is the only country among the top five steel-producing nations to have seen growth in production in April, while the others saw their production drop by as much as 7% during the month. China, which is the world's largest producer of steel, has seen its production in April fall by more than 7% year-on-year to 85.9 million tonnes. Japan, the United States, and Russia have also seen their production of steel decline by 2-6% year-on-year during the month. India, which is the world's second-largest producer of steel, saw its production rise by 3.6% to 12.1 million tonnes in the same period. It's a fact that the global economic landscape has been turbulent, but the robust growth of our country's steel sector has given us confidence to stay positive. 📝 The steel industry is currently facing a crucial moment in its history. It must address the urgent need to reduce its carbon footprint while keeping up with the growing global demand for steel. As one of the largest sources of industrial carbon emissions, accounting for roughly 7-9% of global CO2 emissions, the steel sector plays a vital role in the fight against climate change. 💡 India aims to achieve its net zero emissions target by 2070. According to India's steel ministry, the domestic steel manufacturing industry emits 2.2-2.7 tCO2/tcs (tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel produced) against a global average of 1.8-2 tCO2/tcs. Why I look for ‘leaders’ and not ‘managers’ - Abhyuday Jindal Growing up in a household full of visionaries was quite an exceptional experience. Most know that the story of my company, Jindal Stainless, began when my grandfather, O P Jindal, started a humble bucket manufacturing unit in 1952. He was a man that everyone looked up to. Even now, if you visit any of our manufacturing units, you will hear stories about him — and not just about how he helmed the company. There are countless accounts of how he had an extraordinary insight into the ordinary, how he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, how he could look at a manufacturing line and immediately tell which nuts and bolts were not properly aligned, and innumerable stories of how much he cared about his people. His impact is felt even today. Then came my father, Ratan Jindal, a titan of industry who catapulted Jindal Stainless from a position of domestic leadership to making an impact on the international stage. His eye for detail and business acumen are the reason Jindal Stainless gained global recognition. Both of them never ‘managed’ their companies. They ‘led’ them. They have not only helped me learn the kind of person I want to be but also the kind of people I want to hire and surround myself with — dreamers, visionaries, and most importantly, leaders. Both The Calm And The Storm In every organisation, the role of managers is extremely important. You need managers to achieve day-to-day tasks. They bring order to the system, ensure that employees work seamlessly, and bring in efficiency and quick solutions when and wherever required. Leaders, however, are built differently. I believe that leaders are less like managers and more like artists – they solve problems strategically and creatively. You’ll see managers functioning extremely well in business-as-usual circumstances but different situations may throw a wrench in their efficiency. Leaders not only shine in normalcy, but they also thrive in the thick of chaos when solutioning and ideation are needed the most. They bring passion and energy to the table and are not hesitant to upset the balance of things to achieve long-term results. They are a storm of energy and vivacity, brimming with unconventional ideas and out-of-the-box thinking that can take any company from inertia to rapid growth. Leaders always look at the big picture, and this attitude helps companies achieve success in the long run. When the company finds itself in trouble, the manager is too busy trying to put out small fires. The leader, though, has their eyes firmly fixed on the horizon, a picture of calm amidst the chaos, an inspiration for their crew as they steady the ship and guide it to calmer waters. Leaders can discern the need of the hour and, based on what would drive the company’s growth, they will embody the calm or the storm.

Steel has become an indispensable element in our lives, and consequently, the standards for its quality are steadily becoming more rigorous. These heightened quality standards have led to the emergence of secondary steelmaking, which has become imperative for steel manufacturing units. This allows them to generate high-quality steel with minimal dissolved gases, exceptionally low carbon content, and steels suitable for electrical applications. Previously, we heavily relied on imports for these grades of steel. However, there has been a gradual decline in imports as our domestic steel plants have honed their capabilities to produce steel of a quality that aligns with global standards. Industry leaders such as Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and SAIL have embraced novel and advanced techniques to manufacture steel of such high calibre.

Learning Week at ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is all about inspiring our future leaders. I conducted a session on “Lessons on Leadership from the Bhagavad Gita” for our talented junior and middle-level managers which was attended by about 650 participants virtually. I wanted to spark a conversation that went beyond traditional leadership models. The Bhagavad Gita, for all its spiritual depth, offers timeless principles that translate beautifully into the world of leadership. We began by exploring the true essence of a leader. Is it simply about titles and authority? Or can leadership be found in every individual who contributes to a larger purpose in his or her small way keeping in line with the adage- If not me, then who? If not now, then when? We delved into this question, the four yogas (paths) outlined in the Bhagavad Gita, and how they help in developing or enhancing the Leadership attributes. Although distinct, these four paths offer a holistic approach to navigating life's complexities. * Jnana Yoga (Path of Knowledge): Attaining Self-knowledge through study, practice, and experience- thereby sharpening your vision, creativity, innovation, and confidence as a Leader. * Karma Yoga (Path of Selfless Action): Dedicating your actions to a higher purpose - service to the Divine or humanity. Performing your ‘dharma’ with dedication, altruism, and equanimity helps you to be a servant leader and lead with integrity and accountability. * Raja Yoga (Path of Self-Control): Embarking on a disciplined journey of self-mastery and mental control helps in creating self-awareness (understanding strengths and weaknesses), improved decision-making, and being agile in the “VUCA” world. * Bhakti Yoga (Path of Devotion): Unwavering love, devotion, and surrender to the divine, to the community, to your company, and to your team, will help you to lead with unwavering commitment and passion, be an empathetic leader, and to delegate to and empower your team. Personally, for me, Karma Yoga - the path of dedicated action - has been a guiding light. It's about giving your all, doing your duty with unwavering commitment, and leaving the results to a higher power. This, coupled with Bhakti Yoga's emphasis on faith and surrender to the divine power, has helped me become a more resilient and effective leader. So, I urge you, our young leaders to embark on this journey. Explore the wisdom within, find what resonates with you, and use it to forge your own path. Look beyond the #Resume to find value. One of the pillars of that value is recommendations on culture fit In a role there are 3 elements - capability , motivation and fit Capability in senior levels is either a given or very hard to measure. So why bother Motivation has to be understood. The key driver of the candidate and trigger points needs to be understood and our ability to provide the same in the role. Else, the candidate won't fire Finally, fit is the most important. Motivation will actually cause friction, if fit is not there. We humans consume stories. Recently read a news article that ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Ltd is in talks with banks to raise $1 billion. This is an exciting development for the steel sector in India. It shows the confidence of the steel industry and how the market is set to grow in the country. As per the news report, the fundraising is going to be one of the biggest ‘local-currency loans’ this year to fund a firm's expansion. Three major banks - State Bank of India, ICICI Bank Ltd, and Axis Bank Ltd - are participating in the syndicated lending. India's steel sector has been tremendously growing in the past few years because of large investments in multiple verticals - from real estate to infrastructure and manufacturing. Right from large to mid-size steel manufacturers are benefitting from this growth. This fundraising by the world's two largest steel producers - ArcelorMittal and Japan's Nippon Steel Corp - for a joint venture in the Indian market will further boost the confidence of the steel manufacturers. Additionally, it will likely have a positive ripple effect on the entire steel ecosystem. Being part of the Indian steel industry, I see this as a positive development that will encourage other steel companies to follow ambitious expansion plans, invest in research and development, and adopt sustainable practices, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in the Indian market. #India #economy #steel #steelindustry #makeinindia
