  • The Konar and the Apple: Fun, Beauty, and Dread - From Ahwaz to California

    Dastaan

“At once charming and chilling, The Konar and the Apple leaps from memories of invented childhood games and hijinks to traumatic images of the domestic disruption of revolution, war with Iraq, and the growing pains of the new Islamic Republic. A master storyteller, Hodjat invites the reader to take a front-row seat, witnessing a life lived with love and intention, yet always open to startling new adventures.”
    - Elizabeth Papp Kamali, Deputy Dean, Harvard Law School

“We rarely learn the back stories of today’s technology leaders – but here Babak Hodjat eloquently, entertainingly and compellingly recounts a coming-of-age journey through war, revolution... and love.”
    - David Rowan, Founding Editor-in-Chief, WIRED UK and author of Non- Bullshit Innovation
Praise for Babak Hodjat’s The Konar and the Apple

“As someone who grew up in the Middle East and was also uprooted by war, I found Babak’s stories relatable and endearing. Babak’s writing and his attention to the little details brought his childhood to life, transporting me to Iran, in the middle of the Kooy, Ahwaz’s university housing campus where he grew up.”
    - Dr. Rana el Kaliouby, New York Times bestselling author of Girl Decoded

“What makes these coming-of-age stories of innocence and wonder so compelling is that they are told against the backdrop of growing up in the Islamist Republic of Iran. Hovering just behind the gentle banter of teenage boys at play are the regime’s tentacles reaching everywhere, even to the narrator’s hair, but also tearing
    a tight-knit family asunder.”
    - Micha X. Peled, Award-winning independent filmmaker, The Globalization
Trilogy: STORE WARS, China Blue, Bitter Seeds

“We sit next to Babak Hodjat, and we live his moments through his eyes, words and emotions. In his deadpan humor, disarming simplicity, and authenticity, he shows us how extraordinary circumstances and ordinary, everyday decisions shape one’s life.
A beautiful kaleidoscope of a journey.”

  • Age-Varying Fitness Estimation

GPTP 2012 (GeneticPrograming Theory and Practic, to be published)

In this paper, we introduce the basics of the age-varying fitness function, in which fitness estimation is incrementally evaluated and enhanced repeatedly over subsets of the search space. We provide a categorization of application areas for this method, discuss pitfalls in applying this method along with suggestions to avoid them, and at the end, we will present a sample problem that will demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

  • A Genetic Algorithm to Improve Agent-Oriented Natural Language Interpreters

    GECCO (2) 2004

A genetic algorithm is used to improve the success-rate of an
AAOSA-based application. Tests show promising results both in the
improvement made in the success-rate of the development and test corpora, and
in the nature and number of interpretation rules added to agents.

  • Evolution of the Laws that Deal with the Utilization of Information Networks

2003 BISC FLINT-CIBI International Joint Workshop on Soft Computing for Internet and BioInformatics, 15-19 December 2003, University of California Berkeley

This paper examines whether the value predicted by the Three Laws of Information Networks (Sarnoff's, Metcalf's, Reed's) holds true in real world, and proposes a strategy for increasing the practical value of information networks.

  • Introducing the Adaptive Agent Oriented Software Architecture and Its Application in Natural Language User Interfaces.

    AOSE

Adaptive Agent Oriented Software Architecture (AAOSA) is a new approach to software design based on an agent-oriented architecture.
In this approach, agents are considered adaptively communicating modules divided into a “white box” module, which is responsible
for communications and learning and a “black box” which, is responsible for the independent specialized processes. An AAOSA
parser can parse context sensitive languages. The use of this methodology in designing user interfaces…

In this approach, agents are considered adaptively communicating modules divided into a “white box” module, which is responsible
for communications and learning and a “black box” which, is responsible for the independent specialized processes. An AAOSA
parser can parse context sensitive languages. The use of this methodology in designing user interfaces helps overcome many
human-machine interface problems by limiting the domain of language processing to the functional domain of the application.

  • Introducing a Dynamic Problem Solving Scheme Based on a Learning Algorithm in Artificial Life Environments

IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence, IEEE International Joint Conference on neural networks (IJCNN-94), Vol. 4, PP. 2333-2338, 1994

A new dynamic problem solving scheme is introduced and the learning algorithm behind it is explained. To devise and test this new method a prototype artificial life program has been implemented and used to test different aspects of the method and compare it with similar problem solving schemes.
