March at Intuit was one for the books! A little protip for those of you frustrated with workday sites not accurately importing your resume. Just ask ChatGPT to do it, but specify that work history needs to be shown in MM/YY format, and tell the AI NOT to change anything on the resume, just the formatting.

Change. It's inevitable! As individuals, finding ways to be resilient in times of change (or better yet, THRIVE in times of change) is critical in today's world of work. In the challenges and friction that come with change is where the opportunities hide, is where growth blooms, and is where we can commit acts of service to help those around us through it. In so many of our roles, sometimes without realizing it, we also can influence changes that happen to others (and ourselves). The three courses that made up this certificate (Human-Centered Systems Thinking, Designing for Change, and Leading Complex Projects) all had one amazing thing in common - how do we consider the human element at work? How do we account for and design with these magical, unpredictable, intelligent, creative, transformative things called human beings that make up every organization and ultimately are the critical piece to making any strategy a (successful) reality?

The shift by many companies to become ever-more draconian (ref. Dell) in their Return to Office Mandates hints at something that's not often covered in RTO articles. Most agree that RTO mandates are either an attempt to boost productivity, layoff staff by stealth, or a combination of both. Which sounds bonkers. Why not establish real performance metrics for staff? Why approach headcount reduction in such an untargeted fashion, especially in the US, where employers can effectively fire-at-will? I think the truth hiding at the bottom of many of these stories, especially in tech companies, is that human capital is being seen by some as increasingly unnecessary in modern companies. Most have probably drunken the cool aid of AI, and all that are involved in digital products have seen real-world gains from use of GitHub CoPilot. They want to be hyper-lean. In a world where startups are trying to scale to billion/trillion-dollar values on the back of a tiny number of very hard-working, very well-paid staff it's not too much of a stretch for established companies to believe their own hype and try and ape the same business model. Many will try, few will be successful.

This was an amazing panel yesterday. Some key takeaways: 1. do not underestimate your transitional skills-what have you done in your past role that transfers to a new role in tech... 2. "Get T'd up' - in addition to having a wide breadth of knowledge, go deep in some areas. 3. be data driven (qualitative and quantitative) and document your accomplishments Thanks so much for all of the insight!

LIFE HACK: 🛠️ California is a big state, but this works for many (most? all?) states. Ready? Don't laugh! It's simple, but effective. I collect library cards when I travel within my state. If you do this within your state of residence, you probably don't have to pay a penny for a card (outside of taxes you already pay). Researching work in the current labor market is fascinating because there are so many different realities–and realities beneath the realities–that are shaping our work experiences. For instance, today there are 1.2 vacant jobs out there for every one person seeking work. But… are things really that good? If you’re in the workforce currently, or better yet if you are on the job hunt, this vision of a rosy, opportunity-rich marketplace probably does not align with your experiences. And that’s at least partly because of what is going on in organizations themselves. This Bloomberg report paints a somewhat disheartening picture: Upward mobility for talent is becoming less and less likely. For Millennials who are well into their mid career, promotions fell by an entire percentage point between 2022 and 2023. Among white collar professionals, just 1 in 100 saw a promotion in the first quarter of this year (the typical rate is about double that). It’s easy to conceptualize how disappointing and disengaging this is for individuals. But the real impact comes later: existing workers shouldering the additional work of someone who is leaving or retiring, without any bump in title or pay. A stagnant workforce that becomes increasingly burned out, unable to be productive. An incoming generation of workers that can’t break in, and don’t have reason to believe there are opportunities for growth and career advancement even once they do. A whole labor force of people who don't see organizations as places their fundamental human needs for achievement and mastery can be fulfilled. Upwork’s Gen Z research found that Gen Z workers who freelance do so because of the control it gives them over their own career progression. What they charge is directly tied to the skills they attain and value they bring. The level and complexity of the projects they get to work on are directly tied to their skillset and level of experience. It’s a super simple, clear way to link what they do, to how they are rewarded and viewed by an organization. The bottom line: When existing organizational structures fail them, the most driven people will find a way. Now is an excellent time for organizations to review their promotion processes, ensuring they are (a) possible to execute, even in tough economic times, and (b) focused on the right things (which probably does not include how many in-office hours they log). But it’s also a good time to consider how the organization will leverage skilled, driven talent that is charting their own course, because I predict we will start to see more of them as people increasingly find they aren’t getting what they need from traditional business structures. #futureofwork #genZ https://lnkd.in/gbNv4zJ4
