As Dan notes, "Integrating social features such as comments, polls, live chats and live blogging directly into news platforms can foster a sense of community and belonging, encouraging active participation and deeper connections with the content...The future lies in creating interactive, personalized and empowering news experiences that resonate with younger audiences, building a more engaged, loyal and vibrant news community for the digital age."

The race for attention continues. Attention is quickly becoming one of the newest metrics to gain wide-spread, industry acceptance. During last week’s IAB #NewFronts, attention took center stage. Teads announced their partnership with leading attention technology providers, TVision and Adelaide, to maximize the quality of engagements across video screens. This comes as Adelaide began rolling out their new planning tool and dashboard called Flight Control, which has been adopted by a wide array of media agencies, programmatic vendors, and other ad-tech firms.  And at POSSIBLE last month, Lumen Technologies revealed their Lumen Loop attention targeting solution. It’s fair to say that attention has, well, captured the industry’s attention. Attention emerged as a new metric around the mid-2010s. It proposed to move beyond simply quantifying whether an ad was available to be seen on screen, i.e., viewability, and measure the extent that someone actually paid attention. Methodologies have evolved over time from eye tracking and facial coding (both of which require consumer consent) to Responsible Attention Metrics, which produce data that simulates human attention without having to observe the actual user. Numerous studies have found that campaigns which capture more attention also drive better business outcomes – longer durations of attention on individual impressions were strongly correlated to increased impact throughout the marketing lifecycle, from awareness to sales. Furthermore, a recent study by Realeyes - Vision AI quantified the direct sales attribution for a major CPG marketer based on attention. This has led to announcements like those noted above, agencies building attention metrics into their programmatic product offerings, and the emergence of new companies like Impact Media, which offers small and mid-sized marketers, who may not work with the largest holding company agencies, the ability to buy media against guaranteed attention. In addition to serving as a proxy for sales, attention metrics offer another way to weed out lower quality placements. At the end of the day though, placement is only one factor in capturing consumer attention. The quality of the creative remains paramount. Therefore, attention metrics will become critical to identifying and predicting the most effective content to command attention. I'm generally supportive of the PET sub-sector, which is innovating not only to protect personal privacy, but to preserve the commercial model that underlies digital, and especially open-web programmatic advertising. It does, however, worry me when browser and device companies are in the privacy and data protection driver's seat. This approach is likely to mean more fragmentation, which makes it harder for brands and publishers to coordinate their audience addressability and measurement across media types, platforms and devices. It also creates an economic unevenness that has nothing to do with the actual value of an audience (see exhibit A: cookieless Safari CPMs). By way of example, let's take a look at Google Privacy Sandbox. Notwithstanding the multiple millions of dollars of investment required of most of us in adtech, Sandbox was designed to work initially with Chrome and eventually Android. That's nice, but totally unhelpful for brands and publishers that want to protect audiences using Safari, Firefox or any app in the iOS environment. And what about CTV? Mozilla is in a totally different category than Google, and as Allison reports, "... but as to whether Anonym will create any privacy-focused technology specifically for Firefox, Mozilla’s web browser, nothing’s been planned yet." Nonetheless, I think a degree of independence and cross-platform capabilities is key if we're going to succeed in preserving the value of trusted personal data relationships.

Taylor Swift may bellow "Shake It Off", but the DOJ isn't planning to allow Live Nation and its parent Ticketmaster to do so against antitrust charges. The lawsuit will claim that Live Nation's dominance in the live event ticketing market undermines competition and harms consumers. Let's face it, cheap date and concert tickets don't typically go together (unless we're talking about garage bands). Ongoing scrutiny and criticism of the ticketing industry have made the biggest players in the room - Live Nation and Ticketmaster - the target and drawn the ire of fans. The reality is the 2010 merger of the two companies had already fueled concerns about potential monopolies and unfair practices. The Ticketmaster platform controls about 80% of the U.S. ticket sales mosh pit. It's a good gig if you can get it. The last straw in the concert square dance came with Ticketmaster's handling of Taylor Swift's "Eras" tour in 2022, where the lack of transparency, exorbitant ticket fees, hidden junk fees and surcharges, questionable customer service, allegedly anticompetitive practices, and an inability to block bot purchases of tickets left consumers looking for someone to blame. Don't blame the roadie. Are Live Nation and Ticketmaster really the villains in the great ticket junk fees caper? In fact, it brings up an interesting 'he said, she said' discussion. On the one hand, the ticketing giants have said tickets are actually priced by artists and sports teams, so they typically make 5-7 percent of the face value of the ticket. On the other, artists consistently argue they have no way to set ticket prices, and they see fees for their events exceeding the ticket's face value. The antitrust lawsuit is the ultimate soundcheck for the ticketing giants. While monopolies may not necessarily rile people up, jack up prices and you'll quickly tick off legions of Swifties, baby boomer Rolling Stones fans or the many monster heavy metal ballad lovers. Given all the discussion about the Trade Desk's announcement of a "premium" publisher ranking, I figured I should try and "news jack" 😉 with a reminder that at Pixalate we have a "Publisher Trust Index". The PTI is a ranking of top websites, CTV, and Mobile apps, with breakouts for regions, and countries. We publish the methodology the rankings are based on and the grades for each factor (depending on the platform that covers reach/popularity, IVT, viewability, MFA, ads.txt score, engagement, brand safety, etc.), so that publishers can work on improving their scores. 95% of US decision makers expect further signal loss in 2024 and beyond. IAB revealed the *actual* state of data In a report last month, surveying of 500 brands, agencies, and publishers. It found:   🫥 72% expect “consumer data, including browsing history, PII, and location to be continually reduced.” 🚨 More than 80% of respondents say the makeup and structure of their organisations are being directly impacted by signal loss and legislation. 🎯 However, it's not all doom and gloom: 66% plan to increase contextual spend in response to market changes, coming out highest in terms of increase in ad spend by tactic. The IAB Tech Lab's 10-year anniversary theme references Churchill in "The End of the Beginning," but CEO Anthony Katsur kicks off with a pretty notable rejoinder of his own to start the day: "In my 30 years in this industry, I have never seen such a moment of frothiness." There is a ton in flux when it comes to the relationships between consumers, publishers, adtech, agencies, and advertisers... Oh wait—#retailmedia should be thrown in there too. It's a crazy moment indeed. What's not in our control? The consumer and their behavior. Linear viewing in decline, rise in streaming TV. While linear is still popular (sports!), consumers are demanding control of their viewing experience. IAB Tech Lab is pushing standardized linear-streaming measurement. It's been the year of mobile since 2004! Nah, the year of mobile was actually 2019, when more time was spent on mobile devices than desktop. Snackable content is where it's at! Most of it is UGC—not a dirty word anymore. Publishers in the room: Who is *gold* on page views? One person, huh? How many of you are gold on audiences and outcomes? Because that's where we're headed. Adversity has always been the breeding ground for innovation. I don't have all the answers, the Tech Lab doesn't have all the answers... But all the people in this room have the capacity to come together and figure out the answers. #iabtechlab
