Two hugely promising signs for the future of the CMO role, from the latest Spencer Stuart report: "Women achieved parity with men in 2023, representing half of all Fortune 500 CMOs — an increase from 47 percent in 2022." 💪 YES! Go Marketing Leaders! Let's lead the charge to make gender parity a reality in ALL business functions! 👩👧👧 I'm a mom of two daughters, and I truly want this to happen for them, no matter which job they might want someday! "Forty-three percent of externally recruited Fortune 500 CMOs in 2023 came from a different industry, versus 37 percent in 2022." ⏭ On this latter point, I am seeing SO much value that B2B SaaS marketers bring to industries that are in a less advanced stage of digital transformation, perhaps due to the age of the industry, because they bring a strong metrics and operational focus. ⏮ But conversely, I'm also seeing more B2B SaaS CMOs talking about leaning back into what they consider "the basics" of marketing - which they used to frown on - branding and creativity. This is, in my view, because more tech companies (especially in martech) now feel "samey" and don't have strong, differentiated brands. B2C marketers just can't get by that way. Competition is fierce, they're not disrupting an industry but competing in a longstanding one, trying to innovate faster and better than their competitors do. Conclusions: 🎨 Art: We B2B CMOs have a *lot* to learn from B2C CMOs. Our growth marketing playbooks no longer work the way they did 10, 5, 2 years ago. 🔬 Science: B2C CMOs can also learn from the growth marketing playbooks as they continue to digitize. I was recently interviewed by Raconteur on why CEOs need to know how to speak to the press. I advise that executives should respond naturally in written Q&As, more akin to how they would actually speak, to avoid coming across as contrived - and this is where PR professionals can be a help or a hindrance. I also highlight the fine balance C-Suite professionals should try and strike when engaging in verbal interviews, “being human while staying on-message” but “not letting it stray into over-familiarity and too far away from what you are there to actually talk about.” This is something myself and the team at O'Hear & Co work really hard on when supporting startup founders and C-Suite or other spokespeople. Leaning on my ex-TechCrunch experience, I also share tips on the best way for journalists to gain access to busy executives, such as considering whether a quick quote is needed, or a genuine dialogue to inform a long-form article. I've studied the Honeywell ecosystem for well over a decade. From my point of view they should have well eclipsed $100M in value from generative AI but like many established corporations they were slow to adopt and rollout. Even off the data they share in the story... 3,000 engineers at a $100 hourly rate should hit that easily. That is only approximately 350 hours annually per engineer, which at a full year rate of 2080 hours is only a 15% performance increase. (the average Honeywell engineer salary is $121K - with full benefits and load cost they should be floating around $100/hr) That doesn't take into account eh other 100K+ employees... It goes to show that big orgs simply cannot pivot and capture the value in high growth innovation sectors like startups and smaller mid-sized orgs can. #innovation #talentintelligence
