  • Broadband Development Impacts on Employment and Economic Growth

    This research shows that improving the economic growth and increasing the employment rate in the national scale are among important macroeconomic criteria in different countries as determining and evaluating their effective factors and the efforts towards aligning the countries’ activities, plans and policies in leveraging these factors are of a great importance. It is found that developing information and communications technology, telecommunications and broadband communications in specific, has an important role in improving different economic indicators in developing countries.

    The results are based on annual provincial data for the period of Q1 2006 to Q1 2011, using panel data regression model and least squares (LS) and estimated generalized least squares (EGLS) methods with fixed effects, to determine the quantitative impacts of increasing broadband penetration on economic growth (without oil) and unemployment rate. The discussion shows that the low increase in the economic growth and the decrease in the employment rate result from the low level of development of the country, lack of telecommunications infrastructure and the low level of broadband access, adoption and usage all around the country.
