Jonathan Gerhardson
>>> You are Jonathan Gerhardson, a freelance journalist in Massachusetts. Write ... a compelling Linked-In post that provides obvious advice about how to succe ... ed in one's career. The tone should be positive and a little patronizing. Sure, here's a LinkedIn post aimed at offering some friendly and uplifting advice to aspiring professionals: "Greetings, ambitious folks! Jonathan Gerhardson here with some straight-talking guidance on career success. Let me share a secret: Success leaves clues. And today, I've got three time-tested tips to steer your journey skyward. 1. Network, network, network! You've likely heard this before, but it bears repeating. The relationships you forge are invaluable. Attend industry events, join relevant groups, and reach out to mentors. Networking opens doors and presents opportunities that can propel your career. Imagine it as a intricate web of connections, where each new link could lead to something amazing. 2. Always upskill. The world is hungry for lifelong learners. Dedicate time weekly to learning new skills, keeping pace with industry trends. It's an investment in yourself, boosting your value and confidence. Attend webinars, enroll in courses, soak up knowledge like a sponge! 3. Be the solution, not the problem. When challenges arise (they will), don't just whine about them. Step up as the person who offers solutions. It's a simple yet powerful mindset shift that sets you apart. Being proactive demonstrates your value and earns you recognition. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination. Keep learning, keep adapting, and keep pushing forward. Your dream job awaits!" This advice might seem straightforward, but sometimes the simplest tips are the most effective. A little reminder can go a long way in keeping people motivated! And hey, if you've got your own tried-and-true strategies, share them below! Let's inspire each other's journeys.

A lot of writers are tempted to jump straight into a line edit or copyedit after finishing the first draft of their novel. Here’s why that’s a BAD idea. - There are going to be big-picture, broad issues that haven’t been dealt with i.e. your character development is nonexistent, your beginning is sitting in the middle, you have a tendency to tell and not show. - Your plot might be underdeveloped and your climax? Well, it isn’t climaxing. - You have far too many characters and most of them serve no purpose other than another face in the crowd. You need to cull. When you embark on the editing journey with a professional editor, you need to receive overarching, big-picture feedback so that you can go away and get started on The Big Rewrite, or a second draft. Only then can an editor properly interrogate your writing at sentence level and assess how it is serving the story. If you think you can jump straight to phase two, think again. Finished your draft and ready to start your editing journey from the very beginning? Get in touch and let’s get started.

When I was a student at Carnegie Mellon University, I frequently walked past the nearby WQED building, where Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was filmed. Weather permitting, I would take the wooden stairs down the steep Pittsburgh hill that connected one of Carnegie Mellon’s parking lots to the small WQED parking lot, walk right down to the building itself, and gaze up at the unassuming place where Fred Rogers broadcasted his beloved children’s show for over 30 years. I later learned that Mr. Rogers decided to pursue a career in children’s television because he believed that this revolutionary new technology was being used in a way that was contrary to children’s well-being. He not only saw the problem, but he dedicated his life to pursuing his belief that thoughtful, caring people could use this technology to children’s benefit instead — and the rest is history. Now, more than 50 years after the first episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was broadcast across the United States, a whole host of revolutionary new technologies are advancing faster than anyone can keep up with, and it seems impossible to carve out the time and mental space to evaluate how they’ll impact our youngest generations. Sadly, it's clear that children around the world are already struggling — academically, emotionally, and socially — and parents, educators, and other concerned citizens are trying to figure out how to best use our schools’ limited resources to help address these challenges. Meanwhile, tech giant Meta is trying to get “institutions serving learners aged 13+” to purchase their Quest “mixed reality” headsets for use as soon as this fall, despite having no clear evidence that these headsets can provide any educational benefit to children. Why is that? In the latest edition of my Substack publication, Digital with Discernment, I examine this question in light of Meta’s financial incentives and consistent record of disregarding children’s well-being. I also ask readers to consider what kind of world we want to create for the next generation, and provide editable letter templates to help you take action to block Meta’s attempt to further exploit our children. Whether or not you have kids, I hope you'll take a few minutes to consider this issue, as well as the broader question of how we can make sure our revolutionary new technologies are actually used for the well-being of the most vulnerable among us. https://lnkd.in/gsuiZ73g

Today's DP is "Elizabeth Gilbert and the Pinterest Fantasy Life," in @curaffairs. "In other words, Gilbert, who has spent half her life as a professional writer, now believes that hers is simply a vocation. Yet, when she actually describes the trajectory of her career—and it has been a long and illustrious one—she treats it not as a mystical calling but as work. At one point, for instance, she relates how her editor at GQ, where she was then a staff writer, pulled a story she had worked on for five months, a travel story about Serbia on which the publication had spent a lot of money. The editor’s rationale was that he realized she was not the person for the job and there was no point in her pursuing it any further; he told her to simply move on to the next assignment. Gilbert’s point in relating the anecdote is that writers must always be prepared to end projects that aren’t working. But we might glean a different story here: that no one hires a casual, vocational writer to work on a travel story about Serbia for five months. The freedom to flit, to cut one’s losses and move on, is possible only when one has the backing of a serious institution and serious money, plus an editor who can sign off on half-a-year’s salary and travel expenses for a project that never sees completion." https://lnkd.in/gxX5NFVF

Literary Discoveries: Unforgettable Reads from My Latest Newsletter In the most recent edition of my monthly newsletter, I delve into several books that have captivated my attention and imagination. One standout is David Benioff’s 'City of Thieves.' This gripping novel is loosely based on the author’s grandfather's experiences during the harrowing siege of Leningrad in 1942. The story follows Lev, a young man caught violating curfew when he and his friends loot a dead German soldier's parachute. Unlike his friends, Lev is captured and, alongside Kolya, a deserter, faces execution. However, a Russian colonel offers them a chance at redemption: find a dozen eggs for his daughter's wedding cake within a week, and their lives will be spared. What follows is a thrilling, often perilous quest through a city devastated by war, where the usual horrors of conflict are compounded by a desperate hunt for something as mundane as eggs. 'City of Thieves' not only offers an exhilarating escape but also serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of dire adversity. For more intriguing reads and insights into the literary world as seen through the lens of an octogenarian author with a penchant for dry humor, consider subscribing to my newsletter. Amen. "This isn’t about how The New York Times list is biased (though it is). This isn’t about how authors buy their way onto various national best-seller lists by buying their own books in bulk (though they do). No, this is about the far more insidious title of “Amazon Best Seller”—and how it’s complete and utter nonsense." #ampublishing #pubtip #publishingtips #bookmarketing

I've been telling writers to read their work out loud for years, but listening to your work aloud activates different parts of the brain that can aid in the revision process. Fortunately, we all have the tools to do this on our phones, and thanks to Suzy Vadori, we have the instructions for accessing them. #Writers, what other readers are you using? A client recently mentioned Natural Reader. What else are you using to listen to your WIPs? #WritersCommunity #WritingTools
