Age is no longer an issue for Mr. Wellington, 23, who officially founded his firm, UpSurge Media, in 2009 and has built it into a profitable company that brought in $3.8 million in sales last year, serving clients such as Blockbuster, Nissan, Match.com and skin-care brands Proactiv Solution and AuraVie. Earlier this year, he relocated the 12-employee firm to Manhattan from Danbury, Conn. It specializes in "performance marketing" campaigns, focused on generating sales leads online on websites that drive traffic to its clients' sites, in exchange for a fixed rate per lead or sale.

Mr. Wellington is part of a small group of young entrepreneurs in the New York City area who are trying to bring the shadowy affiliate-marketing industry—which some have recently rebranded as "performance marketing"—into the light of day, slowly winning over corporate clients cautious about protecting their brands.
