A successful "ugly" brand needs the culmination of a few factors to get it right. The art of the "ugly" shoe lies in mastering comfort, marketing, and cultural resonance. Unsuccessful brands tend to falter with one or several of these. The ugly shoe trend is part comfort, part clever marketing, and largely due to cultural resonance following the pandemic. HeyDude failed to deliver on the comfort front, and the designs weren't appealing. Uggs, Crocs, and Birkenstock have the redeeming qualities and relevance to make it work. #Trends #Fashion #Branding

Last week, alongside Tennille Kopiasz we had the opportunity to host Melanie Vidal as a guest speaker in our Leadership class. With an impressive 18-year career at L'Oréal spanning various brands, divisions, and countries, Melanie shared her invaluable leadership insights with the students of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s FIT Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management MPS program. During our session, we delved into the significance of teamwork and collective intelligence, emphasizing the importance of having the right talents in the right positions. "It's the whole team who wins when someone scores. The best functioning team is composed of many different talents in the right spot." Melanie also highlighted the value of delegation and having a strong support system to propel your career forward. "There are different types of pressure as you navigate your career. Initially, the pressure is on your deliverables. However, as you progress, you rely on what others produce, and your time management becomes a collective effort." #Fibromyalgia –AKA Invisible Disease–is a condition characterized by widespread pain and fatigue, disproportionately affecting women, especially as they approach #menopause. Here’s an overview of how this condition impacts women: - Approximately 3.4% of women are affected by fibromyalgia, compared to only about 0.5% of men. - The diagnosis ratio is roughly three women for every man (75% women). - Most women are diagnosed between the ages of 45 and 53, aligning with the peri-menopausal and early menopausal years. - By age 80, about 8% of women are likely to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Traditional treatments often don't provide enough relief for fibromyalgia, leading many to explore alternatives like #cannabis. Q1 was truly a barometer for how important a role the capital markets play in keeping the innovation and momentum going in the beauty industry. We saw about equal parts growth investment and M&A and so many incredible brands, retailers and suppliers find the funding they needed to keep things moving forward. Deal activity certainly wasn’t spread equally throughout the beauty ecosystem with the at least 7 more shutdowns tracked (mostly in the retail category and tied to The Body Shop debacle) but dealmakers are feeling very bullish about beauty and are, generally, unphased by all the macro factors keeping the markets on a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Its products (especially its serum) gained rapidly cult following Estée Lauder first invested in DECIEM in 2017, increased its stake to become majority owner in 2021, and recently exercised its option to purchase the remaining interests after a three-year period on May 31, 2024 using cash on hand for an estimated 860 million dollars. The total investment approximated 1.7 billion dollars over the three tranches EL reported that Deciem generates between $0.5-1bn sales p.a. Deciem is one of the few successful acquisition The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. completed over the last decade although it is fair to recognize that it was not always easy & happy (cf. the removal of the founder & its subsequent suicide) As a comparison, CeraVe (another science-led affordable skincare brand with a dermo-cosmetic growth model) was acquired by L'Oreal in 2017 for $1.3bn. CeraVe recorded close to $5bn retail sales (Euromonitor) in 2022... Those two transactions are part of the top 10 top ROI M&A transactions in the FMCG industry over the last decade... You might not know the name Marcolin Spa, the Italian eyewear manufacturer, but you’ll definitely know the brands they produce frames for: Tom Ford, Christian Louboutin, adidas, BMW eyewear, Candies, Gant, 6CDS, Kenneth Cole, Marciano for Guess, Max&Co, MaxMara, Pucci, Skechers, Timberland and Tod’s. Revenues last year crept up 2% but EBITDA grew 27.9% driven by strong performance in Asia following a re-org in the region. Despite this reports have been common that PE backers PAI Partners (83% shareholders) have put Marcolin up for sale at a cool €1.3Bn. Interested parties are said to include Safilo, Marchon, Kering and EssilorLuxottica. #Marcolin insights FY23: 📈 Full Yr revenue €558m, +2% YOY 📈 Adjusted EBITDA reached 78.1 million euros (+27.9% v FY22) 📈 13m glasses sold 📈 EMEA - revenue was +1.7% - driven by the luxury segment in France, UK, Italy and Spain 📈 Americas - revenue was -4.8% - impacted by macroeconomics of the region and a declining eyewear sector 📈 Asia - revenue was +81.5% - Strongest growth came from South Korea, and the countries of SE Asia (operated by third party distributors) 🏭 Revenues by region: EMEA 47.4% Americas 39.6% ROW 5.2% APAC 7.8% Key FY23 Highlights ✅ Paid $250m for a long-term licence agreement with The Estée Lauder Companies for TOM FORD eyewear, a significant extension of the current licence agreement ✅ Acquired the the German company ic! berlin GmbH for €38.5m. The acquisition was arranged with the aim of increasing metalworking expertise and expanding the portfolio of luxury brands, strengthening the commercial position of the Group in key areas such as Asia and Europe. ✅ Signed new licence agreements with MCM and Christian Louboutin (the latter at the beginning of 2024) and the renewal and extension of licence agreements for brands already in the portfolio such as Emilio Pucci, Zegna, Max & Co, GCDS, Harley Davidson and Skechers ESG ✅ Implemented a path to sustainability in line with ESG standards (since 2021). Actions focus on various issues, including carbon emissions reduction and the circular economy. ✅ Reduced use of fossil-based materials. Increased use of innovative plastic materials. The latter include bio-based acetate, which is employed in a number of collections for some of Marcolins key Brands. For injection-molded eyewear, instead, R-PET plastic (Recycled PET) is used Employees / ED&I ✅ 57% of employees are women, 43% of whom are snr managers ✅ With the amalgamation of ic! Berlin headcount increased from 1854 to 2000 ✅ A Psychological Help Desk was launched through an online platform accredited by the Italian Health Service offering 24/7 help and support to anyone in need.
