Dell is set to significantly upgrade their XPS 13 Plus laptops with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor. This chip offers a major leap in battery life, lasting almost twice as long as the previous Intel processors during video playback. This is due to both the efficiency of the Snapdragon X and the lower cost, allowing Dell to put more resources into the battery itself. The Snapdragon X is also significantly cheaper for Dell to purchase compared to the Intel chips used previously. This cost saving allows Dell to offer a competitive starting price of $1,199 for a new XPS 13 with the Snapdragon X, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a full HD display. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite, slated to power laptops from various OEMs in 2024, has been put to the test against Intel's Core Ultra 7 155H. The Lenovo 83ED, featuring the Snapdragon X Elite, has surfaced on Geekbench and scored 1,628 points in single-core and 11,392 points in multi-core tests. However, the scores are lower than Qualcomm's in-house benchmark scores. This pre-production sample with an 8+4 CPU configuration requires fine-tuning before hitting shelves. The Snapdragon X Elite's poor performance could also affect the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4's launch in October. Are you ready for the next generation of ARM-based PCs? #Qualcomm has just unveiled their Snapdragon X Elite series, which they claim can match the performance of Apple’s M2 at a fraction of the power consumption. Sounds impressive, right? Well, there’s a catch... Whilst you can purchase an Apple M2 MacBook today, and most likely a (spoiler alert) M3 Mac tomorrow, but Snapdragon powered laptops are currently Vaporware™ (mid-2024 according to Qualcomm)... 🤔 When Apple decided to transition their CPU architecture from PowerPC to Intel, they provided Rosetta as a translation layer. Later when they decided to transition from Intel to Apple silicon, they provided Rosetta 2 as a translation layer. Apps written for Intel work on Apple silicon, no intervention required by the user or the developer. 👍 Microsoft, on the other hand, has been struggling to provide decent support for x86 emulation on ARM devices. Their Surface Pro X was a flop, and many Windows apps still don’t work well on ARM. Microsoft and Qualcomm need to work together to make their software and hardware sing together, considering they have been working together since 2016 and its still not right... 😐 Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite sounds promising, but it’s still a pipe dream. Apple’s M2 Max is an actual product you can buy. Qualcomm should have been more honest and said: “Snapdragon X Elite: It might be slightly faster than M2 Max someday… if Microsoft ever gets its act together… don’t hold your breath… it could take a while…”
