The William Pitt Union was abuzz with inspiring talks and valuable learning sessions.
Lana Whitehead from Sharpened Mindz offered unique insights on violence intervention and prevention.
Marcel Johnson and Yusef Shelton from Back2Purpose delivered powerful talks about their impactful community work.
Speakers from New Jersey, including professionals from New Directions 360, shared their successful strategies for combating violence.
The day concluded with a special moment as Judge Cooper swore in students as Certified Ambassadors of Nonviolence, awarding each a medallion to signify their new status.

Day 1 Recap of the Violence Intervention Summit
What an incredible first day! We kicked things off with Pastor Shirley Lyle from Macedonia hyping up our students, followed by @kingdm_kidd of @Back2Purpose leading powerful positive affirmations with the youth. @yusefsheltondafirst rocked the stage, and we had a lively dance competition that got everyone moving!
Our inspiring guest speakers included Pittsburgh’s Mayor Ed Gainey and Newark’s Deputy Mayor LaKeesha Eure, who shared impactful insights on violence prevention initiatives, including reallocating 5% of the police budget to provide employment opportunities for young people. Newark’s “1Hood” initiative was also highlighted, showcasing the power of community collaboration.
Dr. Allison Culyba from Pitt, Umme Beasley from Rutgers University, and Marlo Thomas delivered meaningful messages, while breakout sessions with NJ organizations like Sharpen Mindz and New Directions 360 provided valuable insights. Chef Keith emphasized the importance of “Generational Health” through healthy eating.
