Ever-rising levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane are heating the planet, amplifying heat waves, and raising sea levels. Managing these troublesome gases has become an international priority. But first we need to accurately measure them. Scientists measure greenhouse gases using light. Each type of gas molecule absorbs specific colors of light, giving it a unique “fingerprint.” By analyzing light that has interacted with the molecules — a technique called spectroscopy — it’s possible to spot these fingerprints and determine how much of each gas is in the atmosphere. These measurements ultimately tell governments and companies where to focus efforts aimed at reining in these planet-warming molecules. Tornadoes are destructive, and not just because of high windspeed. The unique qualities of tornadic winds make them more likely to peel roofs off houses or kick debris missiles up into the air. In this clip, NIST researcher Marc Levitan explains what makes tornadic wind so disastrously different. Learn more about how Marc and his colleagues are figuring out how to design buildings to keep people safe from tornadoes and bringing those findings into building codes: https://lnkd.in/e_BC_DE6 #Infrastructure #Buildings #Standards #Materials

In 2018, the world agreed to redefine the kilogram. Instead of being pegged to the mass of a physical object in a vault in France, the kilogram is now defined by a few fundamental constants in nature. This means researchers no longer have to worry about a physical object that can decay or change over time, potentially throwing the world’s measurements into chaos. But the transition away from using a physical object has presented some challenges. So, NIST researcher Darine Haddad, Beatrice Rodiek from Germany’s national measurement science institute (the PTB) and their colleagues are working together to understand why different measurement approaches are leading to different outcomes. They hope to bridge the small gap between different techniques – and learn much more about measurement science in the process. Learn more about this tricky measurement challenge in our latest Taking Measure blog post: https://lnkd.in/dFEXXC2g #Measurement #Standards #Metrology #Mass

The MEP National Network’s (MEPNN) supplier scouting service can be applied on a national, regional, or local scale. By leveraging our extensive relationships and knowledge of U.S. manufacturing capabilities, we identify U.S. manufacturers with specific production and technical capabilities and connect them to new customers in the supply chains of larger companies and government agencies. There are currently 36 open supplier scouting opportunities for U.S. manufacturers seeking domestic suppliers for various items. Have you heard of microcombs? They’re chip-scale devices that generate and measure frequencies of light with utmost accuracy and are used in timekeeping and optical communications. But they operate within a limited wavelength of light (near-infrared), which is usually used in telecommunications. Now, NIST researchers and their colleagues have developed a new way of extending that range to even shorter wavelengths. The shorter wavelengths generated by the microcomb could enable scientists to take clearer images of biological and biomedical samples. Learn more about the novel method: https://lnkd.in/eaE8VP8m #Bioscience #Biomaterials #Electronics #Sensors #Frequency

Today, the Department of Commerce announced Wisconsin has officially been selected as a U.S. Regional Tech Hub, unlocking $49 million to grow the state’s personalized medicine and biohealth sector, including advancing research and innovation, growing the state’s economy and creating jobs, and boosting American competitiveness in a cutting-edge industry. The designation will allow the consortium to boost research and expand lab space, increase coordination and collaboration, improve access to capital to start and grow businesses, and further build out the personalized medicine and biohealth technology sector. This federal funding is matched by state funding of $7.5M and industry funding of $24M, bringing the total funding and commitments to over $80 million to support transformative projects. A year ago, WEDC convened a group of Wisconsin leaders, and together we identified this opportunity. Teams of hard-working collaborators have worked to get us to this moment – but without leaders like Senator Tammy Baldwin and Governor Tony Evers – this never would have happened. Did I mention Wisconsin is having a moment? Scratch that. Momentum. https://lnkd.in/geki5DSY
