How would you define an extraordinary team? A team is a group of people with complementary skills and diverse personalities who are committed to a common purpose for which they hold themselves accountable. Let's break that definition down. 👉 Group of People: It starts with people. No people, no team. Leaders build people. Your greatest legacy will be the people you build. 👉 Complementary Skills: What makes a team extraordinary is they each bring skills to contribute to the team’s goals. These skills complement those around them. Complementary means to combine in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another. That means extraordinary team members bring skills that bring out the best in those around them. 👉 Diverse Personalities: Extraordinary teams are diverse. Imagine a team of people where everyone was just like you. It might be fun for a while, but the results would be limited. We need others around us who bring diversity to the way we get work done. The diversity makes the outcomes better. 👉 Committed: If there is no commitment, there is no team. Extraordinary teams are committed to each other, the vision, the goals, and to fighting for the highest good of those around them. 👉 Common Purpose: Extraordinary teams are aligned and moving in the same direction. They are clear on the common purpose and committed to doing the work together to achieve that purpose. They embrace the purpose vs. just tolerating it. 👉 Hold Themselves Accountable: Yes, the leader is there to drive accountability, but extraordinary teams do this from the bottom up. Extraordinary teams hold each other accountable. They hold each other to the standards of excellence and don’t wait for someone else to do it for them. They take personal ownership and celebrate, champion, and challenge others to do the same. #management #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #teamwork

When you’ve been a leader in an organization for a long time, it’s easy to get complacent in your role. Try not to do that. So many newer leaders get discouraged by complacency in the workplace. When newer leaders come to you with ideas, hear them out. Try to say yes more than you say no. No matter how long you’ve been leading, empower those below you to lead well. Set an example for them of how they can lead those below them, too. Remember as you progress in your leadership role to not get complacent but to always be learning and growing. Want more quick leadership tips and advice? We forget a lot of what we hear. Ever heard of the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve? The forgetting curve is a mathematical formula by Hermann Ebbinghaus that originated in 1885. The curve demonstrated the rate at which information is forgotten over time if we don’t attempt to retain it. Studies suggest that humans forget approximately 50% of new information within an hour of learning it. That goes up to an average of 66% within 24 hours. That means we forget a lot. That also means that people forget a lot of what you communicate. You have to work hard to ensure your communication sticks. If it doesn't stick, it won't move people. The good news is, you can learn how to make your communication stick. One place to start is to learn to communicate in a way that resonates with your audience's personality. #management #leadership #communication #leadershipdevelopment

As a leader, at some point you will face adversity or uncertainty. No one wants mistrust, suspicion, or fear on their team, but it can happen. The less trust you have, the more transparency you need. Great leaders don’t get quiet. Communication fades because we don’t want our weaknesses to show. Great leaders communicate often, but when things are difficult, they communicate even more. The unknown is even more difficult to deal with than the painful truth. Let this resonate and as a leader, be sure to communicate more. You will be more likely to guide your team through a season of challenge into a season of prosperity. #leadership #management #personaldevelopment

These two actions will take you from a good leader to a great leader. 1. Engage: Disengaged leaders are ineffective leaders. You must invest in those relationships with your team or risk impacting your ability to lead. Everyone deserves a good leader. People don’t really care how much you know until they know how much you care. 2. Follow Through: When you don’t follow through on your promises, your leadership credibility is impacted. Want to become a great leader? Start by having one-on-one meetings with your team and creating intentional time to engage with each of them. Put these meetings on your calendar as often as makes sense for you and your employees. #management #leadership #personaldevelopment
