A huge thank you to Hilary Franz, Washington’s Commissioner of Public Lands, Rachel Pasternack, Global Lead, Forests & Climate, for The Nature Conservancy, and our own Paul Hossain, VP of Natural Resources and Climate Solutions, and Ara Erickson, VP of Corporate Sustainability, for bringing the public, conservation and private perspectives together for an engaging panel discussion last night about how we can leverage our different forests, landscapes and objectives to deliver natural climate solutions at scale. Commissioner Franz might have summed it up best: “My one wish would be that we would stop fighting over forests and starting fighting for our forests — and in fighting for our forests recognize that everybody has value in their opinions and their experience and where they’re coming from, and that we will go faster the sooner we don’t look at each other as enemies.” #naturalclimatesolutions

Natural climate solutions provide some of the most accessible and readily available tools for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Russell Hagen, senior vice president and chief development officer for Weyerhaeuser, recently joined Veriten's C.O.B. Tuesday podcast to discuss how we're growing our positive climate impact through nature-based solutions, including high-integrity forest carbon projects, renewable energy development and more. Earlier this spring, 380 middle and high school students convened at our Cool Springs Environmental Education Center just outside New Bern, N.C., for the 25th annual North Carolina Coastal Envirothon. Sponsored by the North Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Envirothon tested students from 15 coastal counties on their knowledge in natural resources and ecology. “It’s so cool to see the students get excited about things like forestry and just being outside,” says Blair (Allman) Owen, a planning and roads forester at our Timberlands office in Vanceboro, who volunteered for the fifth time this year. “They’re excited to compete, and this event exposes them to a variety of potential careers in forestry and natural resources. It also puts Weyerhaeuser in their field of vision.” #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #FutureForesters https://lnkd.in/eVyGH5Q5

Our Lower Columbia team recently donated a 20-ton load of Douglas-fir and maple logs to the Oregon Zoo. Sustainably harvested from Scappoose, Ore., these logs will provide opportunities for the zoo’s polar bears and orangutans to climb, play and engage socially within their habitats. When the logs are placed, two of the first animal residents to enjoy the new features will be the Oregon Zoo’s beloved polar bear, Nora, and Jolene, a 2-year old orangutan. "We’re excited to play a role in Nora and Jolene’s enrichment and provide them an opportunity to explore new materials from right here in Oregon,” says Steve Keniston, Lower Columbia area manager. https://lnkd.in/eQfCQpKY

For over a century, Weyerhaeuser has taken the long view on managing America’s timberland. We were one of the first companies to regrow our forests and prove the potential of sustainable forestry. We are building on our century-long commitment to sustainability by unlocking the potential of our working forests by providing natural climate solutions at a scale that can make a positive impact today. "There’s a seasonal rhythm to survey work," says Matthew Hane, a terrestrial resources manager based in Eugene, Ore., who helps track and protect the wildlife in our forests. "Our program focuses on threatened and endangered species in Western Timberlands, excluding fish and aquatic species. Since wildlife doesn’t stay in one place, the surveys are ongoing. Our focus is on spotted owls, marbled murrelets and other species of concern." Learn more about Matt and his career journey with Weyerhaeuser. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay https://lnkd.in/ey5bAttW

Thanks to all who took the time to join us this week on a legislative tour sponsored by the WASHINGTON FOREST PROTECTION ASSOCIATION. Attendees learned about how we grow seedlings at our nursery in Rochester, Wash., then toured our Vail Tree Farm in Rainier, Wash., which is also home to the Skookumchuck Wind Farm. These tours provide an important opportunity for local officials to connect directly with our team on the ground and gain insights into our sustainable forestry practices, including how working forests and wood products contribute to climate change solutions. The bipartisan group of Washington state legislators in attendance were Rep. Melanie Morgan, Rep. Ed Orcutt, Rep. Joe Schmick and Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen. Legislative assistants in attendance were Kate Armstrong (Sen. June Robinson), Pavi Chance (Sen. Marko Liias), Andrew Whitten (Sen. Judy Warnick) and Braden Sigua (Sen. John Lovick), plus Rebecca Lewis of the agricultural committee staff. Special shout-out to Kate, whose grandparents drove a log truck together!

Through our national partnership with Be Pro Be Proud, we are excited to be introducing students to rewarding career paths in the skilled workforce, including opportunities in forestry and the forest products industry. This work is a big part of Weyerhaeuser's ongoing support for rural operating communities, and this week, we were honored to engage with leaders from around the country at Be Pro Be Proud’s 2024 National Conference in Greenville, South Carolina. Many thanks to our partners and the attendees for the great conversations and engagement! Read more about the work we’re doing together: https://lnkd.in/gHRPDmwy

Paul Hossain brings his background as an environmental engineer and his commitment to sustainability to his work as Weyerhaeuser's vice president of natural resources and climate solutions. Paul's vision for renewable energy projects on our land is to work with partners who understand that, while we're developing theses projects [to support the clean energy transition] in response to the global climate crisis, we also need to be responsive to local community challenges. We're committed to developing these projects with a long-term, sustainable future in mind — for our forests, our communities and the world.
