After working with a lot of manufacturers on their B2B eCommerce programs over the last decade, I have seen a really wide range of capabilities. Some companies are early in their journey and have simple online catalogs, while others have very complex B2B tools and capabilities. At each stage, there are different levers that can be used to improve and grow. To help our clients figure-out which levers to pull and how to build best in class eCommerce capabilities, we start with an eCommerce Maturity assessment. Here’s a summary breakdown of the six stages: Stage 1 - Initial Presence: Basic website showcasing products and product information. Still reliant on traditional sales channels and backoffice order entry. Stage 2 - Transactional Capability: Basic online ordering and payment options, limited integration with back-office systems. Stage 3 - Enhanced User Experience: Site has rich product content, advanced search, product customization, and self-service tools. Some use of detailed data analytics for insights. Stage 4 - Integrated Systems: Seamlessly connections between eCommerce platforms and internal systems (like ERP and CRM) for real-time data sharing and personalized customer experiences. Stage 5 - Omni-channel Strategy: A unified experience across web, mobile, social media, and physical stores. Use sophisticated data analytics and tools for targeted marketing. Stage 6 - Innovation and Leadership: Lead the industry by adopting cutting-edge tech and continuously innovate products and customer engagement strategies. Evolving through the stages of eCommerce maturity takes time and focus.
