We’re proud to feature in Pulitzer Prize winner Ed Yong's incredible piece in The Atlantic exploring the reality of 'Fatigue' in chronic illness. Fatigue is a profoundly debilitating symptom that is too often misunderstood and trivialised. Ed highlights that: • Fatigue is severe and multifaceted. Unlike everyday tiredness, it's not alleviated by sleep and difficult to push through. • Post-exertional malaise (PEM), a key symptom of ME/CFS, is a state of complete exhaustion even after mild physical/mental activity. • Despite being able to objectively measure it, PEM is often ignored due to beliefs that exercise is beneficial and ill health should be overcome by will. • Treatment is mainly about symptom management; activity management is crucial but difficult due to societal expectations. You can read Ed’s article here (https://lnkd.in/gHSy5c2C), to find out more about why individuals battling fatigue face disbelief, despite scientific support for their experiences, and why they need our empathy and our support.

🎓 Today, we’re proud to be partnering with Imperial College London to launch our first in-app research studies into Complex Chronic Illness starting with Long Covid and ME/CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). In the past 6 months, an incredible 30,000 people have started using the Visible app to better measure and manage their health. But this data isn’t just powerful individually; it's amazingly powerful for researchers too. That’s why we’re empowering our community to help move the science forwards. From today, Visible users can enroll into research studies straight from their smartphone. If you have ME/CFS or Long Covid, download the Visible app, join the research, and help us make invisible illness, visible. https://lnkd.in/eqcE8FEq Victoria Male Christian Morgenstern Sabine L. van Elsland

This week our CEO Harry Leeming spoke to disability advocate Bérénice Magistretti at Forbes about why we need to talk about invisible illness and the work we’re doing at Visible. “We’ve known for decades that infections can trigger chronic conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Chronic Lyme and Fibromyalgia, but these conditions have been largely ignored by the healthcare system, leaving millions of people to manage their illness on their own.” “By measuring them, we can make these illnesses visible - visible to patients so they can better manage them, visible to researchers so they can better understand them, and visible to doctors so they can better diagnose and treat them.” #invisibleillness #LongCovid #MECFS #ChronicLyme #Fibromyalgia https://lnkd.in/ex4V3zHj
