Strengthening ties between the U.S. & Japan by building a community of leaders across cultures, sectors and generations
About us
The U.S.-Japan Council is a 501(c) 3 non-profit educational organization that contributes to strengthening U.S.-Japan relations by bringing together diverse leadership, engaging stakeholders and exploring issues that benefit communities, businesses and government entities on both sides of the Pacific. The Council promotes people-to-people relations as crucial to a strong U.S.-Japan relationship. Recognizing the catalytic role that Japanese Americans play in strengthening U.S.-Japan relations, the Council cultivates an international network of Japanese American leaders known as Council Members. The U.S.-Japan Council collaborates with other organizations and institutions to develop programs that allow Council Members to engage with their counterparts in the United States and Japan. U.S.-Japan Council programming focuses on key bilateral issues and initiatives and includes the Japanese American Leadership Delegation Program, the Annual Conference and regional networking events. Along with the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, the U.S.-Japan Council also administers the TOMODACHI Initiative, a public-private partnership, born out of support for Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, that invests in the next generation of Japanese and American leaders through educational and cultural exchanges as well as leadership programs. For more information visit the USJC homepage at www.usjapancouncil.org and the TOMODACHI Initiative website at http://usjapantomodachi.org/.

Grateful to Sumitomo Corporation for their continued support and commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders who will grow the bilateral relationship between our two countries.
🎉🎓 Tomodachi: A Bridge to the Future 🌏 Today, we are proud to introduce TOMODACHI Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship Program, now in its 11th year! "Tomodachi" means "friends" in Japanese, and our program embodies the spirit of friendship and mutual understanding. We welcomed back the 10th cohort who returned from the United States and gathered the 11th cohort who are about to embark on their journey to America. Through cultural exchange, they have gained the power to shape the future. We fully support them as they take on new challenges. Their growth and success are a source of pride for all of us. 🌟 Sumitomo Corporation will continue to support young people as they spread their wings. The future is in their hands, and the bonds of friendship will light their way. #SumitomoCorporation #TOMODACHI #Friends #Scholarship #BridgeToTheFuture #YouthEmpowerment

On July 24, members of the Investor Affinity Group met in Shibuya, Tokyo over food and drinks. Participants included USJC Associates Yuna S. (MPower Partners) and Ryota S. (Angel Investor) as well as President’s Advisory Board Member David Kenji Chang (A-N Partners, ALC, ‘23, ELP ‘15) along with guests Yuki Shirato (Techstars), Jutaro Takagi (Syracuse University) and Yosuke Yasuda (Alenx Inc). The founders of this group hope that this meetup serves to kickstart a series of serendipitous encounters between investors and business operators in the United States and Japan.

"The [TOMODACHI Kibou For Maui] project fosters healing, leadership development, knowledge sharing and resiliency by facilitating delegations of students and a delegation of leaders across sectors from Maui to Japan to meet with those involved with the recovery efforts of the Great East Japan Earthquake in the Tohoku region," USJC Board Member Yoh Kawanami (Hawaiian Electric, JALD '24) shared. "All of these key elements would not have been possible without the expertise and engagement of USJC’s members and the generous support of Japan’s government." Read Mr. Kawanami's full reflections below.
