Urban Health Plan and the Literary Freedom Project believe that: 1) Words have the power to move and heal us. AND… 2) Bringing people together fosters healthier communities! That is why we are thrilled to announce our collaboration to prioritize wellness by promoting reading, creativity, and exploring our culture and history through a special book club and writing series based on “Carmen and Grace” a novel written by Bronx native Melissa Coss Aquino (Photo credit: Nina Subin)! Reading has been proven to improve our health by lowering stress and even strengthening our brains! Getting together and collectively sharing our thoughts and experiences creates a safe space to build community! Yes- school is out, and UHP is excited to kick off the summer with a youth workshop led by Grammy-nominated percussionist/vocalist Oreste Kidd Ore! A native of the South Bronx of Cuban/Puerto Rican descent, "Kidd Ore" started studying Afro-Cuban/Latin percussion at the age of 3 at the legendary Boys and Girls Harbor in East Harlem, NYC (WOW!) Kidd Ore is one of the most in-demand players on the scene today.  He is also a talented vocalist frequently called upon to sing lead or background live and in the recording studio. We are extremely excited to welcome him to UHP as he provides our community with a masterclass on the art of percussion, its roots, and how it is used to make beautiful rhythms and sounds in many genres of music! Special thanks to the Bronx Music Heritage Center! It’s that time of the year, and last Friday, we were so incredibly proud to celebrate the A.T. Still University Physician Assistant Class of 2024, who completed their clinical year rotation at Urban Health Plan! This wonderful class worked alongside UHP providers, learning about our community's diverse health and social needs while contributing to our mission to provide high-quality primary care. We look forward to seeing them (left to right: Sara Hannoudi, Fausat Akinyemi, Alejandra Rodriguez, Anita Mutawassim, and Chelsea Alonzo Acebo) continue to grow their careers and develop as community health leaders! June 27 is National HIV Testing Day, and if we are to achieve a world without HIV/AIDS, it is critical that we continue our education efforts and amplify awareness that HIV is not over. Dr. Richard Torres, UHP Medical Director/VP Medical Affairs and board member of the Latino Commission on AIDS, highlights: “The fact is that about 1 in 8 people with HIV don’t know they have it! Urban Health Plan recommends that everyone ages 13 to 64  get tested for HIV at least once a year as part of routine health care and learn about PrEP, a method for HIV transmission prevention! #UHP4HealthierLives #UHP50 #HIVTestingDay

Yesterday, Urban Health Plan hosted an important town hall about the latest NYS Medicaid 1115 Waiver and the rollout of Social Care Networks. We were honored to welcome an impressive panel of notable NY State healthcare leaders who each masterfully contributed to a thoughtful conversation. Special thanks to Douglas York, PhD, President and CEO of Union Community Health Center, for skillfully moderating the event.  Our sincere appreciation to Dr. Oxiris Barbot–President & CEO of United Hospital Fund of New York, and Donna Demetri Friedman, PhD,–Executive Director of Mosaic Mental Health who joined our President & CEO, Paloma Hernandez, to highlight how Social Care Networks might impact the health of the Bronx, how robust investment in increasing health equity and reducing health disparities is key, and why it is a crucial moment to build an infrastructure that promotes the health and quality of life of the next generation of Bronxites.
