Earlier this month, we celebrated 100 years of our Thunder Bay Plant, and employees from across North America traveled to Thunder Bay to join in the celebrations! Over the years, Thunder Bay has evolved with the market and embraced technology to continue providing the best products for our customers. Let's take a peek into the history of Thunder Bay: 🌾 In 1923, a grain merchant from Winnipeg by the name of Nicholas Bawlf purchased a terminal elevator in the Port of Arthur, Ontario for CAD $50,000. This became known as the Bawlf Terminal Elevator. 🌾 In 1946, we took ownership of the elevator and added a malthouse, after prohibition ended and the demand for malt soared. 🌾 In 1957, we invested CAD $4 million to expand the facility, adding B House, C House and the Annex. 🌾 Through the 1980s, we bagged malt on-site until the facility was automated in 1993. We also transitioned our kilns from coal-fired burners to natural gas. 🌾 In 2023, we made even more investments to complete pivotal projects including replacing the A-House air exhaust plenum and grain cleaner.

We recently hosted a celebration at each of our four UK maltings to allow our teams to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of our founding. As well as having time to celebrate together, we had time to explore some of the stories that have made up the last two centuries of producing quality UK Malt. Did you know that our beginnings were in Glasgow, where the Bairds family established the Great Canal Brewery. As well as operating almost 20 floor maltings across the UK at one stage, being a key partner to many of the world’s best beers and whiskies, we’ve also held Royal Warrants - quite the history!
