Sebastian Molnar and I are happy to announce, that our most recent paper was published in The Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, #JEV - a journal of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (#ISEV). Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including #exosomes, play an essential role in pathogenesis of #HIV and other viral infections due to their ability to carry host and viral nucleic acids, proteins, lipids and other #biomolecules and modulate the behavior of the recipient cells. However, due to the overlapping physical properties of enveloped viruses and some EVs, their isolation and characterization remains challenging. Here, with the use of combination of the multitude of methods of EV isolation and characterization, we attempted to address the interplay between #autophagy, Extracellular Vesicles and #HIV-1 pathogenesis. In summary, our study analyzed the intersecting #biophysical, #biochemical, and functional properties of #extracellular #vesicles with the human #immunodeficiency virus type‐1 (HIV‐1) beyond the currently accepted size range for HIV‐1, which might have further implication for HIV pathogenesis. Meet Egra, a chef, entrepreneur and #PEPFAR DREAMS program participant. Through the DREAMS program, Egra received #HIV prevention services, vocational education and economic strengthening opportunities.   The DREAMS program provided Egra with the tools she needed to become a chef at a local hotel, and she also earns income from a business she started with a group of DREAMS women. She is financially independent and has a newfound confidence knowing she can do it on her own. Egra’s story is one of many that emphasizes the importance of PEPFAR’s ongoing investment in young women.   MHRP Walter Reed Army Institute of Research HJF Medical Research International implements PEPFAR in Tanzania and they have reached more than 130,000 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) through DREAMS in Mbeya. The DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe) partnership is an ambitious public-private partnership aimed at reducing rates of HIV among AGYW.

Calling all #postdocs! 📣 MHRP is #hiring a Post-Doctoral Fellow, Flow Cytometry to support the Innate Immunology laboratory led by Dominic Paquin-Proulx at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for initiating and carrying out scientific projects on the role of innate immunity in infection and #VaccineDevelopment. The innate immunology section is particularly interested in studying the contribution of monocytes, dendritic cells, innate T cells (gamma delta, MAIT and iNKT cells) as well as NK cells responses to vector and adjuvant used in vaccination or to natural infection. The position involves understanding how antibodies engage innate effector cells to mediate immunity and assessing other functional characteristics of these antibodies elicited during infection and vaccination. The incumbent will be part of a team of #biologists, #clinicians and #statisticians working on a range of questions related to vaccine research focusing principally on #HIV, but also other #InfectiousDiseases such as #Dengue, #Ebola, SARS-CoV-2 or other pathogens of interest to the program. MHRP is #hiring a Programmer Analyst II to support Data Coordinating and Analysis Center (DCAC), an in-house centralized resource for clinical data management, bio-statistical analysis, reporting and training in support of clinical trials and scientific research. The Programmer Analyst II will provide statistical support for new and ongoing #HIV and other emerging infectious disease studies conducted by MHRP, EIDB, and affiliated programs at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, involving clinical observational research, laboratory research, clinical trials, and other research studies. This includes database and statistical programming, programming for standard report generation, ad-hoc queries, analyses, data manipulation, extraction, and export. The Incumbent should be familiar with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the clinical data management/analysis field. The incumbent will rely on intermediate experience and judgment to plan and accomplish programming goals for multiple clinical trials and studies with a wide degree of creativity and latitude with minimum supervision and mentorship. June 19-21, 2024: Makerere University Walter Reed Project hosted the inaugural #DELIVERWorkshop in Kampala. The workshop was attended by participants from institutions in Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Thailand, the Philippines, and Uganda. At the workshop, the institutions in attendance showcased their capabilities in #HIVCureResearch and reflected on what is required to conduct #HIVCureTrials as part of the efforts towards an #HIVCure. Makerere University Walter Reed Project was honored to host the inaugural Developing Leadership and Innovation for Viral Eradication Research (DELIVER) HIV Remission Workshop in Kampala between 19-21 June 2024. The workshop brought together researchers from Africa, South America, North America and Asia to discuss #HIVCureResearch. The #DELIVER initiative aims at facilitating stakeholder and community engagement, build clinical site capacity, and coordinate technology transfer, training, and validation of specific laboratory assays for HIV remission research.
