TDC 70 has so many beautiful and talented winners it is hard to pick and choose, but the credit titles for Guns and Gulaabs on Netflix India made it easy. These credits reimagine the oft-ignored end credits of a show in a way that lets the audience engage with it (and each other), smile with it, and hence, remember it. Set in a sleepy Indian town in the early 90s, the typography—a mix of type and hand lettering—brings the warm memories of a simpler time to the screen. The names of the cast appear as nostalgic scenes, each referencing the quirks of their respective characters. As viewers watch the show, the connections and Easter eggs unravel as sweet surprises. The hope is that these moments of discovery make it truly memorable.

We’re just moments away from closing our laptops and enjoying the holiday weekend, but we had to share this! Congratulations to TDC70 winner Hayley Lim for her stunning lettering design for Artur Beterbiev, the Unified Light Heavyweight World Champion of Boxing. With 20 straight KO wins and zero defeats, he holds the IBF, WBC, and WBO titles. Hailing from Chechnya and residing in Montreal, Beterbiev’s shorts and gloves for the Beterbiev vs. Smith match feature custom lettering inspired by traditional Chechen attire. The sharp tips of Shashka blades and decorative metal chest pieces influenced the design, matching his precise boxing style while honoring his cultural heritage. The arched shape of the lettering references traditional boxing graphics and accommodates sponsor logos at the bottom of the shorts. Thin lines anchor the pointed shapes, guiding the eye along the curve of the Rival gloves and the angle of the shorts.

Is it time for your PTO yet? As we endure the heatwave in our NYC office, this TDC70 winner reminds us to take our PTO or just imagine doing so with House Industries' award-winning work on the Sandals and Beaches resort logos. "If we ever went through a logo refresh, we’d have to do it the way we do everything else — at the highest level possible,” says Sandals Resorts' Creative Director, Scott Peiffer, “and House Industries would be the ones we’d want.” After years of collaboration and countless hand-lettered sketches, the result is a pair of aesthetically complementary yet functional marks that celebrate Sandals' unique heritage. Ken Barber, House's Type Director and letterer, adds, "The logos' success is evident in the visual harmony created between the Sandals and Beaches identities, which also honors the pioneering spirit of the historic luxury brand."

I know it looks like the TDC is obsessed with milk this week, but who can resist the TDC70 Packaging Design winner from Criterium? Their reusable milk bottle design for Quebec's urban creamery is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, drawing inspiration from classic creamery typography and layouts. The four dots on the back cleverly represent the cow's four udders, adding a charming touch to this innovative design.

Happy Tuesday! Did you put cow milk in your coffee this morning? Well, TDC70 Winner MYOM Fluid Identity from Landor offers a different perspective. Non-dairy products like oat milk seem better, but packaging and transportation matter too. MYOM (Make Your Own Mylk) pays attention to these details, offering a sustainable alternative that's easier to ship, reducing emissions from plant milk. They needed a brand as fluid as their concept, celebrating flexibility and small spaces. We crafted a kinetic typeface inspired by milk drops that morphs and flows, embodying MYOM's practicality. A little change can show us how big the future can be.

Yesterday, we held our Book Night event, and it was packed! Today, we're celebrating our Best of Lettering winner, Will Mower, for his project BlockFace. BlockFace is a 24-piece rubber stamp typography kit based on an open-ended modular system. It offers type and printmaking enthusiasts of all abilities the chance to experiment with typographic pieces and create letterforms. Initially a personal project called AlphaSet, BlockFace was developed over several years before being released as a Kickstarter in 2023. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, an early version of the kit was used for online briefs focused on community and togetherness, with submissions from users worldwide. These collaborative exercises helped shape the design and purpose of the set. Now, BlockFace is an open-source project, allowing institutions or individuals with access to laser-cutting or 3D printing facilities to produce sets for free for personal or educational use.

It's almost Friday, but we're still buzzing about the TDC70 winners! One standout is Canal Magazine Issue 2, our Best of Communication Design winner from Sunday Afternoon. In Issue 1, Canal pushed the envelope with an AR filter that brought the cover typography to life. Canal No. 2 takes it even further with rich content celebrating our beloved neighborhood. This time, we've embedded a short film you can watch via augmented reality by scanning a QR code in the magazine! Canal 2 is a true fusion of design, community, print, technology, and film.
