A pioneer in the field of technology and disability since 1971.

About us

Housed at the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland College Park, the TRACE RERC (Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center) is supported by grant #90REGE0024 from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), part of the Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Our mission at the TRACE RERC is to capitalize on the potential that technologies hold for people experiencing barriers due to disability, aging, or digital literacy, and to prevent emerging technologies from creating new barriers for these individuals. In doing this, we bring together disciplines such as information science, computer science, engineering, disability studies, and public policy. We engage in research, development, tech transfer, education, policy, and advocacy.

We're excited to share that our partner, Raising the Floor, has received a 2024 Zero Project Award! This prestigious award is part of a broader initiative that seeks to build a world with #ZeroBarriers through the search and dissemination of innovative solutions that improve the daily lives and rights of all people with disabilities. Based on TRACE RERC research, the free, open-source tool, Morphic, was chosen among 523 nominations from 97 countries for its innovation in making computers more accessible. Morphic simplifies computer use by offering one-click access to built-in accessibility features via the MorphicBar and its new AT-on-Demand feature enables assistive technology (AT) users to have instant access to the AT they need on any computer they sit down to—regardless of whether their AT is installed on the device. Currently deployed on over 10,000 computers across various institutions in the US and Canada—including universities, libraries, community centers, rehabilitation programs, and job centers—Morphic has made remarkable strides in making technology more inclusive and accessible. Join us virtually at #ZeroCon24 from February 21st to 23rd, 2024, which will be streamed on the Zero Project’s YouTube page. Find more info at https://lnkd.in/g4Jwqae2 . Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this journey! Download Morphic for free at http://morphic.org . #inclusion #disability #a11y #accessibility
