Did you know our autonomous drifting Supra uses skills learned from one of the top competitive drifters from Japan? Or that it has a nickname inspired by a character from a Japanese comic/anime TV series? It even has a "sibling" that can drift autonomously as well!

Improving the quality of human life through advances in energy and materials research, robotics, and AI.
About us
At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re working to build a future where everyone has the freedom to move, engage, and explore with a focus on reducing vehicle collisions, injuries, and fatalities. Join us in our mission to improve the quality of human life through advances in artificial intelligence, automated driving, robotics, and materials science. We’re dedicated to building a world of “mobility for all” where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can live in harmony with technology to enjoy a better life. Through innovations in AI, we’ll… -Develop vehicles incapable of causing a crash, regardless of the actions of the driver. -Develop technology for vehicles and robots to help people enjoy new levels of independence, access, and mobility. -Bring advanced mobility technology to market faster. - Discover new materials that will make batteries and hydrogen fuel cells smaller, lighter, less expensive and more powerful. Our work is guided by a dedication to safety – in how we research, develop, and validate the performance of vehicle technology to benefit society. As a subsidiary of Toyota, TRI is fueled by a diverse and inclusive community of people who carry invaluable leadership, experience, and ideas from industry-leading companies. Over half of our technical team carries PhD degrees. We’re continually searching for the world’s best talent ‒ people who are ready to define the new world of mobility with us! We strive to build a company that helps our people thrive, achieve work-life balance, and bring their best selves to work. At TRI, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds ‒ a fun start-up environment with brilliant people who enjoy solving tough problems and the financial backing to successfully achieve our goals. Come work with TRI if you’re interested in transforming mobility through designing safer cars, enabling the elderly to age in place, or designing alternative fuel sources. Start your impossible with us.

Gill Pratt, Chief Scientist for Toyota Motor Corporation and TRI CEO, addressed a group of energy stakeholders in Washington, D.C., this week at The Energy Future Forum. He discussed Toyota’s plans to reduce as much carbon as soon as possible through Toyota’s multi-pathway approach. Did you know that we can save about 45% more C02 from being emitted into the atmosphere by manufacturing 90 HEVs vs 1 BEV with the same amount of lithium? We call this Carbon Return on Investment (CROI). Listen how:

“Once language-based representations are learned, their semantics can be used to share autonomy between humans and vehicles or robots, promoting usability and teaming,” said Guy Rosman, Senior Research Scientist at TRI and manager of the Human Aware Interaction and Learning team. Researchers from TRI, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Google Deepmind, and other labs have introduced OpenVLA, an open-source vision-language-action (VLA) model trained on a diverse collection of real-world robot demonstrations. Foundation models are becoming vital to advancing #robotics, but adoption has been limited by its closed nature and the lack of best practices. OpenVLA aims to make these models more accessible and customizable to futher accelerate robotics research. Learn more in this VentureBeat article: https://lnkd.in/gM79y6EZ

Happy Juneteenth from TRI! Our African Diaspora and Allies ERG (Employee Resource Group) led celebrations to commemorate the ending of slavery in the US. At TRI, we recognize that many of the technological and social advances we all experience are shaped by the talents and ingenuity of Black communities - despite their ongoing struggle and inequity. We are proud to foster an environment where team members are encouraged to be allies and stand up when we see others not acting from a place of kindness, respect, and best intentions.
