About us

Thistle was co-founded in 2013 by Ashwin Cheriyan and Shiri Avnery, PhD with a mission to make it easy to get and stay healthy while improving the sustainability of the food system. We deliver delicious, ready-to-eat plant-forward meals, snacks, and juices to our customers’ doorsteps. Our convenient subscription service empowers our customers to improve personal and planetary health by eating more plants. Designed by nutritionists and crafted by chefs, our meal design reflects scientific, evidence-based principles of dietary choices that optimize health and longevity, featuring real, whole, plant-rich foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Above all, Thistle aims to show that eating a healthy, plant-forward, planet-friendly diet can be the most delicious option on the table. We’ve delivered over 20 million meals, and maintain ongoing partnerships with local food rescue nonprofit organizations to alleviate hunger and fight food waste. We currently deliver throughout the greater west coast and the northeast, and are continuing to rapidly expand. The San Francisco Business Times named us one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies in the Bay Area in 2023, and Inc. awarded us Best in Business in 2022 among companies that “go above and beyond” in both food and sustainability sectors.     📣 We’ve delivered over 23 MILLION plant-based meals! ⁠ What you eat impacts our planet. Choosing plant-based meals helps reduce the our food system's greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts like deforestation, species extinction, and water pollution. According to Nature Magazine, plant-based diets have been found to have a 75% lower carbon footprint, with 75% less land use, 54% less water use, 66% less water pollution, and 66% less biodiversity loss, than diets that contain a modest 3.5 oz of meat per day.     BIG NEWS 📣 We are thrilled to announce that Ian Mathias has joined Thistle as our VP of Brand 🎉  Ian brings a wealth of experience and expertise, and we're excited for him to help us grow as the leading brand in food, health and sustainability. He’s led brand teams at IDEO for clients in big tech, healthcare and higher education, and in-house at brands like Strava, where he helped build the world’s most engaged community of athletes. Outside of Thistle, Ian’s always running and riding around his backyard of New York City, and searching with his partner for a new favorite plant-based treat  😍 Please join us in welcoming Ian to our table 🌱

    Our core value, Be Human, is perhaps the most important of the five core values that Thistlers embody. "Be Human" reminds us that when we learn from each other and empower those around us, everyone benefits. This month, we tip our hats to four remarkable Thistlers on our Vacaville Management Team who live this core value every day: Jordan Lichman, Jennifer Orum, Carmen Kong, and Jon Rizzo. These outstanding individuals were nominated by fellow Thistlers for their humility, respect, empathy, honesty, and ethical behavior.     Our CEO and co-founder Ashwin Cheriyan was born into a family of doctors, and his earliest memories involve sitting around the dinner table, listening to his parents share stories of their patients who faced chronic illnesses primarily related to diet and exercise. His parents' emphasis on the need for dietary behavior change to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses sparked a lifelong curiosity to explore the connection between food and long-term health outcomes. He started Thistle with Shiri Avnery to challenge the belief that you have to choose between taste and nutrition, convenience and quality, and fresh and prepared – by filling your plate with the highest quality, nutrient-rich, plant-rich ingredients to support healthy weight, improve gut health, and help prevent diet-related chronic diseases.  June marks Men’s Health Month, dedicated to raising awareness about preventable health issues and advocating for early detection and treatment of diseases like cancer, heart disease, and depression.
