Bahamian Independence Day, celebrated on July 10th, marks the anniversary of The Bahamas gaining independence from British rule in 1973; it's a time for Bahamians to reflect on their rich heritage and celebrate their journey as a free and independent nation. We are proud to have a piece of Bahamian culture on The Underline in the form of public art: The Allegory by Edny Jean Joseph. The piece alludes to Plato's Cave, where people are trapped in a cave because they don't challenge or test their beliefs, and uses a Matisse "cut-out" aesthetic to create a child-friendly feel. In addition, the color scheme references the Bahamian gandy dancers in the making of the Henry Flagler's railroad system. This work has been made possible through the generous support of Louis Wolfson, III and a matching grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Today Friends of The Underline and Conservancy thanked our State of Florida sponsors and supporters for securing nearly $1,000,000 for The Underline's 3rd and final phase for unfunded amenities with a fun event at The Underline's new Hammock Playground at the corner of SW 15th Avenue and SW 1st Avenue. With speakers including Daniella Levine Cava, Alexis Calatayud, Vicki L. Lopez and Eileen Higgins and Raquel Regalado, we celebrated the story of partnership and collaboration that makes transformative public private partnerships a reality. I am so thankful for the thousands of people who have joined our movement to make Miami more liveable with improved multimodal transportation, public green spaces and programs and art that benefit all. Also thanks our board of directors who attended and inspire me every day. Last week, The Underline went national, coast to coast! ✈️ Our staff participated in two incredible conferences. In Seattle, WA, The Underline was represented at The City Park Alliance's Greater & Greener Conference with two presentations: "Parks & Big Data Fostering Public Trust in Digital Systems" and "Growing a Green Workforce." Horticulture team member Daniel Arrubla, Chief Innovation Officer Jake Moskowitz, and President Patrice Gillespie Smith exchanged ideas with park operations colleagues, teaching and learning new innovative ways to deliver first-class experience to park visitors. They were also joined by Vania Laguerre, Senior Vice President, Local Market Executive of Miami market for Bank of America, and supporter of The Underline Meanwhile, in Boston, our horticulture team led by Asha Bertsch presented “The Underline’s Green Corridor: A Ten-Mile Thread Weaving South Florida's Ecology into a New Aesthetic” at The American Public Gardens Association's conference. We’re also grateful to APGA for supporting our Horticulture Intern, Celeste Maillard, with an IDEA Center scholarship to participate in the conference. Did you know that by 2026, five miles of The Underline will run through the City of Miami?🌳 We celebrated with a City of Miami ribbon-cutting ceremony on The Underline’s new Phase 2 Hammock Trail. Mayor Francis X. Suarez, City of Miami Commission Chair Christine King and Commissioners Damian Pardo, CFP®, CIMA®, CRPC®, and Manolo Reyes, and Friends of The Underline and Underline Conservancy Board members joined us for the event. We are so grateful for the support of the City of Miami in welcoming our growing park to the Magic City. Following the ceremony, our City Officials met with children from the Leadership Learning Center art engagement field trip. Thanks to the support of Friends of The Underline board member Norma Jean Abraham and the Anthony R. Abraham Foundation, 60 - 4th -7th graders learned about native plants, the ecosystem, and helped paint an emerging mural by local artists “we are nice’n easy,” funded by the Hearst Foundations.
