About us
Founded in 1987, the Poverello Center, Inc. (www.poverello.org) provides nutritious food, services and basic living essentials with the highest degree of understanding, respect and love for individuals living with critical and chronic Illnesses including HIV, in South Florida. Dedicated staff and volunteers meet the nutritional needs of its clients through the distribution of free groceries, household items, and clothing through its food pantry and thrift store. Poverello clients also have access to a full-service gym (Friends Fitness Center) and alternative therapies such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and haircuts at no cost thanks to generous supporters and volunteer providers. The Poverello Center, Inc. operates mainly though the selfless giving of hundreds of volunteers. These individuals assist in the food pantry by writing food orders for clients, packaging grocery bags and boxes. What's in a bag? About 28 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, and enough other grocery items to prepare 21 meals or food for one week. Another key volunteer opportunity is on the event and marketing committee assisting in the planning and implementation of community-wide fundraising and awareness events. Volunteers are also needed at Poverello's Friends Fitness Center, providing free health and wellness services free of charge to the HIV community for more than a decade. Since 2018, we have offered Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (SBIRT) at the Food Pantry. This happened because we held a focus group that indicated our clients in the food pantry didn't know that free substance use and mental health counseling was available in the community. Since then we've found that 50% of the people who come to us exhibit some type of health risk for drinking, drug/alcohol use or smoking along with being food insecure. These referrals into the community have improved the lives of the people we serve and are just one of the reasons that we receive program support in the Health and Wellness initiative at Our Fund. Thanks you!

Prevention for All: Did you know? While PrEP has been a game-changer in HIV prevention, not everyone has equal access. With 94% coverage in white communities compared to just 13% for African Americans, 24% for Latinx, and 15% for women, it's time to bridge the gap. PrEP is for everyone, and it's vital that all communities have the knowledge and resources to utilize this powerful tool in the fight against HIV. Let's unite for equal PrEP access and empower every individual with the choice to protect their health. Stop in to Poverello today, walk out with PrEP. #PrEPEquity #HIVPreventionForAll

Just a few midweek photos of our hardworking staff. They serve around 3600 South Floridians who are chronically ill and food insecure each year. Every day they help the unhoused, encourage health, provide a listening ear and offer healthy foods to those who can't afford them. They do all of this because of the donations and purchases you provide/make to our social enterprise thrift stores. Thank you!
