Around 7.3 million disabled students are enrolled in public K-12 schools in the country. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), students with disabilities are guaranteed the right to free public education with appropriate special education services. However, special education programs are understaffed and underfunded, and students of color with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by the lack of resources. According to The Hunt Institute’s 2023 Across the Aisle survey, 70 percent of voters believe teaching real-world skills for the future work force is an important priority in public education today. Ninety-four percent of voters favor increasing job skills and workforce training opportunities in high school like apprenticeships and internship opportunities. A recent study concluded that 52 percent of students with bachelor’s degrees are underemployed one year after graduation.
