Five Ways to Stand Out as a Summer Intern You worked hard to find a summer internship. How can you put yourself in a strong position to stand out? Here are five strategies you can use to make your internship a success: 1. Show your enthusiasm! When you bring a warm and positive attitude to work, it will help you build strong relationships with your colleagues. 2. Do your homework. It’s always ok to ask for help or bring questions to your supervisor! When you need to ask a question, it helps to do some digging beforehand and come prepared with a possible answer to run by your supervisor. This will show them that you’re resourceful and taking initiative. For example, instead of asking “Where can I find the data I need?”, try: “I did some research and it looks like the best place to find the data we need would be the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Does that sound right?” 3. Respond constructively to feedback. If your supervisor asks you to change something about your work, honor their request, even if you disagree. That doesn’t mean you can’t share your ideas and perspective, though! You’ll get the best results if you approach feedback with a spirit of collaboration rather than trying to debate or disprove the other person’s perspective. For example, instead of saying “Using this image for the flyer would be a really bad idea,” try something like: “Thanks for the feedback about the picture for the flyer. Our conversation gave me a few additional ideas for pictures we could include – let me know if you’d like to use one of these or if I should move forward with the other image you sent me!” 4. Keep your supervisor in the loop. Send your manager regular updates on your progress, especially for long-term projects. This will let them know that you’re on track and show them the impact you’re making. Ask your supervisor how often they’d like to receive updates. 5. Get engaged. If interns are invited to participate in meetings, speak up! If your employer offers team-building or social activities, take advantage of those events. Look for opportunities to network and show that you’re part of the team! Do you have a tip to share on how college students can stand out as a summer intern?
