Connecting the World to a High-Energy Future
About us
All nations need a high-energy future to power industrial and commercial development, job creation and economic growth. But small-scale solutions to energy poverty can’t build competitive economies. So the hopes and security of billions are at risk. The Energy for Growth Hub connects the latest research directly with policymaker demand — to fuel prosperity for everyone. Our Vision: • No person’s potential is wasted because the power where they live and work is too costly or too unreliable. • All countries achieve the high-energy future they need to become prosperous, competitive, and climate-resilient. • Evidence and data drive energy decisions over ideology. Our Mission: • Promote energy goals, policies, and metrics aligned with countries’ own development ambitions. • Advance data-driven solutions by translating research into practical ideas and insights for policymakers.

📰 NEW: Senior Policy Analyst Meron T. summarizes her takeaways from the Africa Energy Forum #AEF24 in a new blog post. "It's about integrated energy planning, plain and simple: No single current or future technology can address all energy challenges alone. Integrated energy planning is essential for contextually incorporating emerging energy solutions. Equally important is the health of African utilities as key institutions for a high energy continent." - Meron T. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e8JRtW8z

TODAY: Katie Auth joined the 2024 Carnegie Africa Forum for a fantastic panel discussion on "Africa’s Natural Resources in the Global Race to Net Zero," alongside Howard French, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and Raul Alfaro-Pelico, hosted by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "Part of this is the US government shifting and trying to get more comfortable in the minerals space, and figuring out how the US can be a force for good in this industry that is historically not great on a social or environmental level. I would love to see a world in which the US and other partners are investing in minerals extraction in a way that ups the social and environmental quality of those projects in a major way. And if we don’t do that, frankly, I think we will have failed." - Katie Auth Watch a recording of today's panel here: https://buff.ly/4clIHSW

Great summary on IEA's global energy investment trends from The Energy for Growth Hub Kathie Auth. It is clear that we need more early-stage, risk-tolerant, nimble capital for projects and companies looking to deploy real assets at scale = Allied Climate Partners Three Cairns Group

The IEA's 2024 assessment of global energy investment is mostly about the biggest players (China, the US, the EU, etc....). But if you dig a little, it also tells us a lot about how energy finance is shifting in less robust economies. My top 10 takeaways:

When it comes to clean hydrogen, African countries have a lot to gain, and a lot to lose. In a #Voices for Cipher News, the Hub's newest senior policy analyst Meron T. breaks down the buzz into six facts to keep you grounded: 1️⃣ Africa’s hydrogen footprint today is small but dirty, much like the rest of the world. 2️⃣ Renewable hydrogen is not new to Africa. 3️⃣ Proposed projects have unrealistic deployment scales and timelines. 4️⃣ Projects require additional renewable energy sources, which face strong headwinds. 5️⃣ Projects lack a buyer or are in very early stages. 6️⃣ The export intentions of many projects add costs and uncertainties. Read the rest of the piece in Cipher and head to our website to explore an unabridged version of the article, along with an interactive map tracking announced hydrogen projects in Africa.

Africa has gained global attention as a prospective hub for hydrogen made with renewable energy, writes Meron Tesfaye of The Energy for Growth Hub in a #Voices article this week. African countries have a lot to gain, and a lot to lose. Finding the right balancing act must begin with an open-eyed discourse free from the hype. Read more: https://nt-z.ro/45jWkPY
