Paul Laurence Dunbar, a classmate of Orville Wright and the first African-American to gain eminence as a poet, continues to inspire many people through his influence and legacy. To honor his impact, community volunteers and a committee led by renowned Dayton artist, Willis Bing Davis, established the Paul Laurence Dunbar Statue Fund (#8590) through The Dayton Foundation. Donations to the fund have helped to complete the life-size sculpture designed by nationally acclaimed sculptor, Ed Hamilton. “At a young age, I realized I had found my purpose to be a helper.” Influenced by a strong faith and the examples of her father, a retired military veteran, and her mother, a retired food service manager, Jackie has made service to others and to her community the cornerstone of her career, volunteer work and charitable endeavors. Today, thanks to the two funds she established through the African-American Community Fund of The Dayton Foundation, she supports causes and organizations important to her and aids aspiring African-American college students from Montgomery County.
