Published in Springer Nature Group's Nature Medicine, findings from a small clinical trial suggest that a new cellular immunotherapy approach could be effective in treating metastatic solid tumors. Researchers from The National Institutes of Health, including 2020 American Association for Cancer Research- CRI Lloyd J. Old Award recipient Dr. Steven Rosenberg, genetically engineered lymphocytes from each patient to produce receptors that recognize and attack their cancer cells. The personalized immunotherapy shrank tumors in some patients, and was able to halt tumor regrowth for up to seven months. “It's just the very beginning of converting normal lymphocytes into cells capable of treating the common solid cancers,” says Dr. Rosenberg. “What this study shows is that it's possible. Once you know it’s possible, you work to improve it.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3xUJoUs #ColorectalCancer #Immunotherapy #CancerResearch

While immunotherapy is an emerging treatment option for sarcomas, CRI Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Md Torikul Islam of Children’s Research Institute at UT Southwestern, UT Southwestern Medical Center explains, many patients with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, become resistant. “To make immunotherapy more effective, understanding the mechanisms by which cancer cells evade immune cells is critical,” Dr. Islam says. “The patient care and survival rate haven’t improved in the last 30-40 years… but we are making strides in understanding its mechanisms and developing new treatments.” During July's #SarcomaAwarenessMonth, explore immunotherapy's long-standing impact against sarcomas, and discover how several researchers funded by the Cancer Research Institute are making a difference in sarcoma immunotherapy research, in our newest blog post: https://bit.ly/4cyCH9E #Sarcoma #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy

In a new study published in Springer Nature Group's Nature Medicine, researchers at City of Hope, including CRI Scientific Advisory Council member Dr. Marcel van den Brink, observed that people with metastatic kidney cancer who orally took a live biotherapeutic product called CBM588 while in treatment with immunotherapy and enzymatic tyrosine kinase inhibitors experienced improved health outcomes. "This study demonstrates again that the microbiome has an important role in the efficacy and toxicity of cancer immunotherapy and can be targeted to improve outcome,” describes Dr. van den Brink, President of City of Hope Los Angeles and City of Hope National Medical Center.
