🤫 This week in tech rumors... According to Business Insider, Amazon plans to enter the "AI chatbot development" fray with a direct ChatGPT competitor, codenamed Metis. This alias follows the company's mythological naming convention—Metis will run on Amazon's AI model Olympus, famed home of the Greek pantheon. 🏔 The nickname seems risky: Amazon's Metis may aspire to offer sage answers to its users, like the goddess of wisdom whispering counsel to Zeus. But joining the GenAI chatbot race this late? Well, we have to imagine that Metis herself might encourage Amazon to invest their resources elsewhere.

According to Google's latest environmental report, AI development has brought their emissions up 48% since 2019. The report's authors wrote, "As we further integrate AI into our products, reducing emissions may be challenging due to increasing energy demands from the greater intensity of AI compute, and the emissions associated with the expected increases in our technical infrastructure investment." Tl;dr? AI is energy-hungry... and is going to take a huge bite out of Google's 2021 pledge to reach net-zero omissions by 2030. C++ made history in June's TIOBE Software Index, stealing the 2nd place spot from its predecessor C for the first time since its creation in 1985. The swap is also an all-time low for C, which has never previously dipped below 2nd place in the Top 3.
