A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of participating in a panel at the Canadian Gaming Summit where we delved into "Next-Gen Gamification: Engaging Millennials and Gen Z" alongside industry leaders Brooke Hilton , James White Andrew Darley , Jaiden Sarai and Jesse Learmonth Learmonth. Our discussion highlighted the transformative impact of an #omnichannel experience on reshaping the Gaming landscape. As someone who has predominately been on the hardware and retail side of Gaming, its been remarkable to see the shift in both the approach to omnichannel strategy and how it is defined. Twenty years ago, many retailers with new, siloed, websites decided to merge the physical-digital divide and pursue an omnichannel retail approach for future sales and marketing, but it was built on a foundation of retail first with online presence supporting that retail environment. Now, as we look at omnichannel strategies in a post-Covid era, especially in Gaming, it’s almost entirely the reverse. Mobile and online gaming entities are looking to pursue an omnichannel approach by entering or re-engaging retail. Regardless of the approach however, the importance of creating omnichannel experiences is paramount to the future success of the industry. As we discussed in our panel, it is critical for us to look at how to attract new generations of players. Many have shifted their focus directly to Millennials and Gen Z as their targets, but as an industry, we should ask ourselves: is this premature? What about Gen X? Are there not younger Boomers that are currently overlooked in today’s Gaming environment? There's a parallel here with ensuring experiences are omnichannel versus multichannel. Game makers and casinos should be making their approach towards the various age groups equally—an “omni-audience” approach, if you will. While population-wise, Millennials may comprise a larger demographic than the Baby Boomers and Gen X, Boomers outspend every other generation by $400 billion annually and Gen X has over a 20% lead in disposable household income against Millennials. As an industry we must be careful not to fall into the fallacy that appealing to a demographic with more people will resultingly bring more spending to the Gaming market.
