Valentine's Day traces its roots back to ancient Rome. The festival of Lupercalia, held annually on February 15, involved early forms of courtship and matchmaking. The day after Lupercalia, February 14, is now observed as Valentine's Day, coinciding with the execution of St. Valentine in 278 A.D. Legend has it that he wrote a letter to his jailer's daughter, signing it "From Your Valentine." Over two centuries later, Pope Gelasius replaced Lupercalia with the observance of St. Valentine's Day on February 14, possibly inspiring the tradition of exchanging "love messages" in remembrance of St. Valentine's letter. The Romans also introduced Cupid, the god of love, adapted from the Greek god Eros. Cupid, often depicted with arrows that cause love, became associated with Valentine's Day, although the exact timing of this association is unclear. By the late 1700s, commercially printed Valentine's Day cards were in use, with the first commercial valentines in the United States printed in the mid-1800s. In 1847, Esther Howard, the daughter of a printer, began mass-producing Valentine's Day cards in the United States after receiving a lacey love note from England. Today, Valentine’s Day spending in the United States is expected to reach just under 26 billion U.S. dollars in 2024.
