Howdy. My name's Garand Tyson, and I've been a core protocol engineer at the Stellar Development Foundation for almost three years now. I work a lot on making sure the Stellar network has the fastest, most efficient validators possible. So far, I've built a custom database designed from the ground up for blockchain called BucketListDB, helped parallelize Stellar's overlay networking layer, and designed the State Archival protocol. Before SDF, I was actually one of David Mazières' students at Stanford, researching Operating System and firmware security. When I think about "Building Better," I always want to approach problems from fundamental first principles and not just copy whatever shiny new trend has captured the industry's attention. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn't always mean it's a good idea. Just my opinion. When I'm not programming, you'll find me exploring the Sierras in the winter or running around music festivals in the summer. This week, I'll be taking over socials. Keep your eyes out for how I Build #BetterOnStellar.

The DeCenter had a wonderful spring semester, and we are pleased to share two important announcements. First, we introduce “Decentralizing Power Through Blockchains: Key Research Questions Across Disciplines,” our first comprehensive white paper. This publication, based on extensive work by our steering committee, draws on expertise ranging from computer science to political science and philosophy, to present a first-principles approach to the most important questions in our field. As reflected in the paper, the DeCenter was established to foster an interdisciplinary approach, not only within academia but also in partnerships spanning industry, open-source ecosystems, policy makers, and regulators. Second, the DeCenter also recently hosted its annual spring conference, which brought together nearly 100 participants from across the ecosystem. We are grateful to our participating speakers and attendees from Consensys, Pantera Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Ethereum Foundation, Dragonfly, Alethea AI, Stability AI, Digital Citizen Fund, Stellar Development Foundation , Trust Machines , TRM Labs, and many others. Please visit our website(https://lnkd.in/e6PVDcTd)to read both the white paper and the post-conference report. To receive notifications about upcoming programming, please email decenter@princeton.edu to join our mailing list.

Meet Bernardo Garcia! After experiencing first-hand the pain and expense of sending money across borders, and helping people in his community send remittances using his phone, he realized there had to be a better way. So he built it better. He's now the co-founder behind your favorite Whatsapp-based payment chatbot, Félix 👋 This is his story: https://lnkd.in/g3CWgWsX
