📚This week we are reading about #GreenAmmonia! ✍️ Last year we published a report on #ammonia: the opportunity it represents as a carbon-free fuel for hard-to-abate transport, but also the need for emissions-free ammonia production, usually termed green ammonia. We also made an investment into the awesome team at NitroFix—the picture below is of CEO Ophira Melamed pitching this week Climate First in London. We have been keeping a keen eye on the space as it develops. So what has changed since then? 🌱 Green ammonia is going mainstream: last month the BBC reported on the new methods to produce ammonia using nitrogen from the air, water and clean electricity as inputs. 🛣 It came off the back of the excellent 2023 roadmap on ammonia as a carbon-free fuel led by Bill David. This is required reading for anyone trying to understand novel electrochemical ammonia production, barriers to ammonia as a fuel, cracking catalysts to enable efficient burning, and many other topics. 💰Green ammonia (using hydrogen from electrolysis) is still ~2x the price of grey ammonia: $800/tonne vs $400/tonne, with a ‘blue’ premium of $30/tonne (~8% premium) 💳 There is lots of investor appetite for green ammonia production solutions with rounds announced for Jupiter Ionics, Starfire Energy, Syzygy Plasmonics, Tsubame BHB, Nitricity, NitroVolt, Ammobia and including our our investment in NitroFix 🛳 And on the off-take side there continue to be announcements for ammonia as a #fuel: the first ammonia ship set to be seabound by 2026 from Yara Eyde, optimised for the trade corridor between Germany and Norway. ⛰ Challenges remain to be solved for full deployment of ammonia fuel, including: addressing the safety concerns about the toxicity and flammability of ammonia, as well as further engine development, ship design and bunkering solutions.

MOL Switch LLC, a 100% subsidiary and U.S. based investment arm of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (株式会社 商船三井) today announced that it has invested in Starfire Energy (Founder & CEO: Joe Beach) Starfire Energy is commercializing modular green ammonia systems and is a technology leader in the green ammonia market. The company is developing equipment to economically make ammonia from low cost renewable electricity to use ammonia as a carbon-free replacement for natural gas, gasoline, and other fossil fuels. These technologies will accelerate the decarbonization of transportation and logistics. Maritime shipping is one of the major market focus areas for Starfire Energy's technology. MOL Switch LLC, is the U.S. based investment arm of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, was launched in 2023 to accelerate the decarbonization of energy supply chain, including its own shipping activity. Joe Beach, CEO of Starfire Energy, commented on the importance of the investment, "Marine shipping is rapidly adopting ammonia fuel to decarbonize.
