Biomanufacturing everywhere

About us

Stämm is a biotechnology company dedicated to making biomanufacturing easy, scalable, and repeatable. We have developed the first methodology for continuous industrial production of biologics and cell therapies leveraging microfluidics and 3D printing. The current way of biomanufacturing has provided humanity with innumerable solutions. Bioprocessing is the most efficient way to align human advancement with a thriving nature. In order to prevent nature from perishing, we aim to put it at the center of all human activities by incorporating its knowledge system within the process of achieving humanity's prosperity. Founded in 2016, Stämm mimics nature’s use of laminar flow to down-size a whole biotech facility into an all-in-one, plug & play desktop unit. Our focus is to decentralize bioprocesses and democratize access to biotechnology products, thus freeing our partners to focus on the disruptive discoveries that make an impact on people’s life. Congratulations to our Stämmer of the Week, Tobias Nicolas Santagada! Back-end is not the simplest thing to explain. It is invisible to the user: you see a button, log in automatically, and expect your data to sync. All that black box works silently behind, creating the feeling that any sufficiently complicated technology is indistinguishable from magic. Tobias, the back-end department leader, and his team are in charge of this behind-the-scenes operation of Stämm’s scientific web apps. They manage the databases and services users rely on seamlessly in their daily work. For an organization of our size to function, there are many mechanisms underlying every one, from assay saves to automated log-ins. The consistency and stability they bring to different divisions make users rely on the platforms for internal use. Thus, those working in laboratories, offices, or workshops only have to think about their tasks, avoiding digital pain points. Stämm benefits from interdisciplinary work. The team aims to centralize information, leading to predictive and expeditive analyses spanning disciplines. They have the triad to solve user problems: back-end, front-end, and UX/UI design. Thus, the user experience is made as friendly as possible. In any case, Tobias continues his quest to abstract solutions and create microservices to put together several APIs and reuse previous work. It allows them to update less often, fix bugs in a single place, and only worry about communication between components. Thank you, Tobias, for your work backstage for the well-being of Stämm's users!

Biomanufacturing requires validated and stable devices. Standardizing procedures requires a lot of iteration and fine-tuning. Today, designing new processes and scaling them up is a challenge, especially for new instrumentation and manufacturing methods. That's where our Biomanufacturing Qualification (BQ) team comes in. BQ is the group of biology specialists that test, verify, and validate the technologies developed by Stämm. To achieve this, they receive cells and media and produce results studied with bioanalytics. At Stämm, we test and optimize our products, such as our Bioprocessor, to continually improve them. BQ analyzes, adjusts, and discovers the most efficient ways to leverage them. In search of safety and traceability, they carry out tests and document them to ensure repeatability. The group is heterogeneous in their backgrounds: PhDs from academia, specialists from large industries, and others from the biotech startup world. This complementarity favors collaborative and interdisciplinary work, generating a cooperative environment. Their vision is dual. With the future in mind, BQ thinks about scaling for tomorrow. As for the present, their attention to detail makes it possible to shape that horizon. They require long hours in the lab, coordination, and trust: a consolidated team. The high volume of work can only be divided because the team members rely on each other. BQ transmits this internal way of doing things to the outside world, helping Stämm network with other companies. Missions such as BioArk's in Switzerland include their representatives, whose future role oscillates between operators and facilitators of the disruptive technologies they develop. Thank you, BQ, for helping bring together Stämm's technologies and the company's innovations! Stay tuned for our next Teäm Spotlight!

Congratulations to our Stämmer of the Week, Francisco Gustavo Correa Tedesco! Microfluidics has an issue: not many people understand the technology. Be it because of previous misconceptions or because they never heard of it before. Generally, it is associated with minor applications or small-scale trials. But at Stämm, it’s much more than that. Professionals like Francisco Correa, a Physicist, and Biotechnology PhD, seek to apply microfluidics at an industrial scale. To that end, they are developing a complex in-house installed capacity to cover biomanufacturing's future needs. The object of study goes beyond selecting, modifying, or multiplying cells. The aim is to do all this while being competitive at the industrial level by cost, simplicity, and speed. This requires deep research & development. Fran explores the possibilities of microfabrication, from millifluidics to microfluidics, making functional devices up to 200 times smaller than previous prototypes and approaching the 10-micrometer scale. Although operating at the micron scale, he knows he is not alone in his endeavor. His team's collective interest in solving these challenges makes it an interdisciplinary venture. The environment Stämm provides gives him independence, rapid iterations, speed of development, and a wide range of designs delivered as a result. Thanks to that, Fran provides innovative solutions to current industry concerns, proving to be at the forefront of his field. Thank you, Fran, for connecting extensive know-how and leaping forward in development!

In nature, cells grow in microvessel networks. In Stämm's bioreactors too. This is only possible by using microfluidics to mimic their natural environment. It's a common misconception that microfluidics can only be used in small volumes. Our in-house 3D printing technology allows us to apply this technology to large-scale bioreactors.

Congratulations to our Stämmers of the Week, the Cloud Biomanufacturing team! Biomanufacturing has standardization and traceability challenges. Today, we generate more data than ever, and assay diversity is growing. As we abandoned organic supports (human memory) for physical ones (paper records), it’s crucial to register today’s data in digital records. However, it's not only a matter of collecting data on a spreadsheet; we must be able to do something with it. Accumulating data that cannot be interpreted or analyzed is futile. That's where the Cloud Biomanufacturing (CMBF) team saw an opportunity. A mix of software, bio, and design, the talented group is dedicated to a high-impact product at Stämm: a platform for tracking formulations, recording assays, and accessing them remotely by anyone in the organization. With a user experience and interface tailored to users, CBMF contains modules that support biological assays, 3D prints, and cell line development. It's a tool that unifies multiple divisions and products, mapping their results and allowing for a transversal analysis of the organization. The team, now in transformation, continues to identify obstacles, define them concretely, and propose practical and future-oriented solutions. This desire to fill the gaps and the group’s continuous learning has led this product to evolve from a stock management platform to a core tool for development. Thank you, CBMF, for getting into the lab with curiosity and willingness to provide solutions!
