Exceptional Care for Life.

About us

Founded in 1906 by two local physicians, St. Mary’s became a Catholic hospital in 1938 operated by the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and later sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. Today, St. Mary’s Health Care System is a regional not-for-profit Catholic teaching healthcare system inclusive of three hospitals, St. Mary’s Medical Group, Graduate Medical Education, Home Health, Hospice Services, Senior Living, extensive outpatient services, auxiliary/volunteer services and clinical affiliations with the University of Georgia/Augusta University. A member of Trinity Health, the third largest non-for-profit health system in the U.S., our Mission is to serve in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities while our Vision is to become the national leader in improving the health of our communities and each person we serve, to be the most trusted health partner for life. St. Mary’s facilities include St. Mary’s Hospital (Athens), St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital (Greensboro), St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital (Lavonia), Georgia Neurological Surgery & Comprehensive Spine, Highland Hills Village, St. Mary’s Mercy Guest Cottage, St. Mary’s Outpatient & Wellness Center and St. Mary’s Infusion and Wound Care Center. St. Mary’s has maintained continuous accreditation by The Joint Commission since 1954; an Advanced Primary Stroke Center since 2004, Spine Surgery certification since 2011 and Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center since 2022. St. Mary’s Hospital (Athens) and St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital (Lavonia) have received the American Heart Association’s 2023 Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus recognition, St. Mary’s Hospital is accredited as a Chest Pain Center by the American College of Cardiology, St. Mary's Athens was named Georgia’s Large Hospital of the Year (2018) and St. Mary’s Good Samaritan was one of only nine hospitals in Georgia to receive the CMS 5-Star designation in 2023.

Updates

  • Congratulations to Tracy Wilkes, a housekeeper with Environmental Services at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital, who has received our July Spirit of Mercy Award. Tracy is a kind, compassionate, down-to-earth person described by her colleagues as “sent from heaven.” She does her job with intense dedication and then does more. For example, on busy days, she will answer a call light so the patient gets immediate attention, and then relay their need to the nurses. A colleague noted, “Infection control is a high priority for her. I have no doubt she is one of the reasons we have a 0% post-op infection rate.” Congratulations, Tracy – and thank you!

  • Meet Dr. Christie Somers, our newest primary care physician at Athens Internal Medicine Associates. Here at AIMA, she provides adult wellness and routine follow-up care for a wide range of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as treating acute care needs like colds and the flu. She says, "I am committed to excellence in internal medicine and palliative care. I advocate for whole-person care, emphasizing the importance of empathy, respect and professionalism." • As we continue to negotiate with UnitedHealthcare (UHC), St. Mary's Hospital, outpatient facilities, and Home Health Care/Hospice Services were forced out of UHC's network on July 1. However, St. Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Group remain in-network. We are doing our best to adapt and innovate, but we rely on fair reimbursement to keep our doors open. Please urge UHC to put patients over profits and restore in-network access to St. Mary's Hospital, Home Health Care/Hospice, and outpatient services. Learn more at www.stmarys-health.org/uhc.

  • St. Mary’s is working hard to reach a fair agreement with UnitedHealthcare that more appropriately covers the true cost of the care we provide to patients. Unfortunately, UnitedHealthcare has forced St. Mary’s Hospital, outpatient facilities and Home Health Care/Hospice Services out of its network, effective July 1, 2024. This impacts patients who are covered by UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage products. However, some parts of our ministry are still in the UnitedHealthcare network: St. Mary’s Medical Group physicians and offices, Sacred Heart Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. Visit https://bit.ly/3zn6EKZ for additional details. Thank you for your support of St. Mary’s and our Mission to be a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities.

  • Did you know? UnitedHealthcare frequently denies or underpays claims. This is done to capture more healthcare dollars for themselves and drives up health care costs. Tell UnitedHealthcare to put patients before profits. Learn more at healthcomesfirst.org or stmarys-health.org/uhc. Especially please urge UHC to keep St. Mary's Hospital (Athens) and related outpatient facilities and services, including Home Health Care/Hospice, in network. Fortunately, St. Mary's Medical Group, Sacred Heart Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital are not affected by the current negotiations and will remain in-network even if the Athens hospital is forced out on July 1.

  • Health insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, are posting record-breaking profits for shareholders, while we are expected to cover the gaps. Without fair rate increases, not-for-profit providers like St. Mary’s struggle to invest in the medical innovations, technologies, and programs our communities depend on. In 2023 alone, St. Mary’s invested more than $11.3 million back into the community. Tell UnitedHealthcare to put patients before profits. Learn more at healthcomesfirst.org or www.stmarys-health.org/uhc.
