Senior Digital Experience Consultant - Former Agency Owner & Ex-VICE

Just about to board a train from Edinburgh to Leeds and realised that this week marks my one year with Squiz UK. 😮 What a year it’s been! I’ve managed to meet and learn from some of the most inspiring people in the digital departments of public and higher education sectors. 🏫 The thing that these sectors share is their deep care for the people that they serve - yes, they have KPIs and goals like the private sector, but their drive to ‘do the right thing’ is something I’m truly humbled by. Tonight at the Heist awards in Leeds we celebrate those within Higher Education who are pushing the boundaries for an industry facing huge challenges. 🍾🎉

Senior Brand & Comms Manager @ Squiz | Marketing Week Mini MBA

I do some of my best thinking while walking the dog 🐶 So, today I braved the NZ winter and had a lovely chat with myself about how much I'm looking forward to next week's Ask Me Anything session. 😏 It's going to be a goodie! This time, I'll be chatting to Nick Condon from Squiz and Ian Finch from Mando Agency about the challenge of empowering marketing teams with self-sufficiency. The discussion stems from the fourth trend in our DX in 2024 report, "Welcome to the era of professional independence". Marketing teams want the autonomy to build, maintain and adapt their digital experiences as market and customer expectations change. They'll seek this independence through the promise of new tech....and marketing leaders shouldn't discourage it. But they need to know that the tech their team is using offers: 🔒 Tight data security ✅ A consistent user experience 🔢 Data that can be integrated into existing workflows 💰 A decent ROI They also need to recognise when tech isn't the right or only solution and external expertise are needed. Join us at 10am BST on Thursday 18th July, to hear how Nick and Ian suggest marketing leaders address this challenge, with perspectives that cover both the tech and human sides of the conversation. Is your martech truly serving you? 🤔 In an AI-fueled market, digital and marketing professionals are feeling empowered by the ever-expanding range of tools available. But hands up! 🙋♀️ Has this wealth of options created a complicated tangle of tools? Has this started to work against you instead of for you? You're probably dealing with duplicative, siloed solutions that suck up limited budgets. Maybe even customer data risks due to a loosely secured mess of third-party integrations 😱 It's time to evaluate your marketing tech! How about some advice from Samantha Goble – VP Digital at XCentium❓ 👉 https://lnkd.in/g9R4q3Wm Quick tip: Don't just chase best-in-breed tooling. Focus on value and stakeholder alignment. #DigitalMarketing #Technology #Martech

    Passionate about Quality

I finally got to listen to this episode yesterday. While it is another great episode, Richard Bradshaw and Vernon Richards challenged everyone who asked a question, to also respond - doh! My question - What does quality mean to you? While I ask this question, a lot, I have never written down my thoughts. I could have ignored this request but I thought no, challenge accepted. So here is my answer 😀 ------------------------------ Like Vernon, when I hear this question, I initially think of Weinberg’s quote, “Quality is value to some person.” However, when it comes to software quality, I like to extend this to include the “who matters” part, as added by Bach and Bolton. For me, software quality relates to a list of criteria that the product should meet in order to be usable. For example, does it work? Is it functional? Does it look good? Is it accessible? Does it work on supported browsers and devices? Is it easy to use? Are there any bugs that, if released, could cause the system to go down? Is it performant? etc. As we know, however, quality is subjective so what I think quality means can be different to the next person, therefore, I always try to take a step back and put myself in our user's shoes - in other words the “some person who matters”. While the product may tick everything on my list, if it doesn’t meet the user's requirements, then it will never be high quality (or even sound quality) for them, no matter how usable, accessible or pretty it looks. If they don’t like it, they won’t use it - simple. While some of this is achieved with well-defined requirements, I think some of it comes from listening. Just listen to users and take on board what they are experiencing from their point of view. Before entering the quality space, I was a trainer teaching our customers how to use our product. I got to experience first-hand what it was like to explain how the product works from my perspective but see them interrupt that differently, achieving a task in a totally different way. Sometimes, that interruption led them down a path where they couldn’t work it out, so I would listen to them and work the problem through. While I am no longer a trainer, I still get to experience this through other means, such as working on customer projects, and I believe that by listening, we get a better understanding of what quality means for the "some person who matters".

A true driving force in the software testing and quality domain. I’m a tester, automator, speaker, writer, teacher, strategist, leader, and a friendly human.

A new episode of the Vernon Richard show has just dropped. This week we took inspiration from the listeners, by using their questions to guide our conversation. Probably one of my favourite episodes thus far. We answer questions from James Thomas, Aj Wilson, Mark Gillott, Leigh Rathbone, Deb Sherwood, Mark Tomlinson, Anna Royzman and Melissa Fisher. https://lnkd.in/enuKnitq
