    Learn Fast and Make Things

Are you curious about research that’s ambitious and useful, but a poor fit for both academia and startups? Intrigued by the Brains Research Accelerator, but don’t know if your idea is a good fit? Do you have too many ideas? Only a vague idea? We’re holding “Brainstem” workshops to help! These 1-day workshops will help folks understand what sorts of ideas are good fits for  “coordinated research programs” – ARPA programs, Focused Research Organizations (FROs), and other research programs that aren’t good fits for either a startup or an academic lab – and help refine those ideas. You can see if you would be a good fit for our next round of Brains (applications open in September)! We’re going to hold a handful of these workshops in September and are gauging interest to figure out where we should hold them. So if you’re interested in having one near you, please fill out this poll: https://lnkd.in/d3WEu9vG

    Learn Fast and Make Things

I’m excited to release something we’ve been working on for a long time: the Research Leaders Playbook: https://lnkd.in/dJafdPmR While there are many resources for people who want to start startups or run academic labs, tacit knowledge dominates how to start and run research efforts like ARPA programs, FROs, or what we do at Spectech: work that is beyond the scope of a single academic lab, but doesn’t make sense for a company or startup. By making it easier to lead ambitious research programs, we hope to encourage more people to start them, with all their wonderful downstream effects. The playbook is a synthesis of ideas and wisdom from many people and domains — current and former ARPA program managers and directors; startups; academia; history; and more.

    Learn Fast and Make Things

Applications for the Brains coordinated research accelerator (https://spec.tech/brains) close Monday, November 20th — that’s less than 100 hours from now. The application is straightforward — a 1-page description of an idea for a coordinated research program. If there’s an idea you’re excited about, you should create this anyway! If you missed it, you can listen to the Q+A we did a few days ago here: https://lnkd.in/eg39XbQK We’re looking forward to having our minds blown by your ambitious ideas!

    Learn Fast and Make Things

We’re excited to announce Brains: an accelerator for research leaders developing ambitious concepts that don’t fit neatly into a single academic lab or startup. Ideas like: what if we could make products directly from atmospheric carbon, reduce the cost of solar panels by 10x, or transform archeology by scanning the world with ground-penetrating radar? Brains is a 13-week program to help these talented individuals refine those ideas, build the skills and networks to run them successfully, and then connect with organizations or funders who can provide a place to execute on them in government, nonprofits, and beyond. For more information visit: https://spec.tech/brains If you or someone you know has an ambitious idea, apply here: https://lnkd.in/ev2H585i
