SOS Meals on Wheels

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers from the Alameda County Department of Adult and Aging Services for helping us honor Older Americans Month! This month, AC volunteers assembled nonperishable snack bags, delivered meals to our vulnerable seniors, and put in some hard work in the kitchen! We are proud to share that this past weekend, our very own Tammy Duran, South Program Manager, was recognized by Assembly member Alex Lee as a 2024 Unsung Hero! Tammy oversees our program serving Fremont, Newark, and Union City, where she oversees the distribution of meals to over 300 homebound adults who rely on SOS Meals on Wheels for nutritious meals and wellness checks. Tammy has been running the Meals on Wheels Program in South Alameda County for nearly 15 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tammy ensured that there was not a missed day of service.

It was a privilege to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who believed in the power of compassion and equality, with my mission driven colleagues at Kaiser Permanente and The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. Our team volunteered to augment the mission of SOS Meals on Wheels by packaging close to 3000 meals for seniors and assembling over 350 care packages. It was a privilege to work with this amazing group who provides 2000 nourishing meals a day to seniors at need. Addressing food insecurity and social support to those that need it most is fulfilling our mission to improve health equity. Thank you Dr. King for the ongoing inspiration. Last week, four members of our team had an amazing time in sunny Arizona at the Meals on Wheels of America Conference. At the conference, we learned and collaborated on important topics like nutrition, fundraising, new ways to support isolated individuals, volunteering, and how to improve our organization as a whole. The experience was nothing short of remarkable—full of learning, growth, and inspiration. It has left us feeling motivated and excited to make our program even better for our older adult community. Our heartfelt gratitude extends to our collaborative partners and all the presenters and organizers who contributed to the symphony of knowledge and innovation at the conference.
